Hey everyone,

I stopped by my local camping store today and noticed the Leatherman Style CS; at under $20, I figured it's something I might just pick up because I like how it looks. I handled it for a bit and I like that the Style CS is slightly lighter yet seems to have the essentials that I require, but it's always hard to say until you've used a tool for a while or spoken to someone who has. I currently EDC a Leatherman Squirt S4, on which I probably use the scissors and knife most often.

Does anyone know how the Squirt S4 and Style CS compare? I'm mostly curious to hear about any potential problems I should look for. How effective is the carabiner? If I clip the Style CS to a belt loop, am I likely to lose my tool? Should I wait for another offering from LM since my Squirt is perfectly fine? I kind of want to retire my Squirt because LM no longer makes the S4 and I really don't like the new PS4.

Thanks in advance!

I have a Style CS, and keep it and a small fixed blade knife in a KSF pocket sheath for lack of anything better. I wouldn't trust the carabiner clip on a belt loop. I like the scissors on it, but the rest is lacking. The bottle opener doesn't work too well, the tweezers are almost impossible to remove without destroying my fingernails, the blade has a badly positioned thumb nick (Would give a lot more leverage further away from the pivot) and a chisel grind... the screwdriver/nailfile blade is fine. Just don't pry with it.

Honestly, the money is better spent on a Victorinox Rambler.

Since you already have an S4, I don't see why you need the CS. Both scissors are about identical, the difference in dimensions and weight is slight, and the S4 offers more useful implements. There is no reason to abandon yours simply because the model has been "retired." They are not hard to find if you need a replacement. My excuse for buying a CS is that the wife commandeered my S4, which she uses every day, so I'll never get it back :( . Eventually, I found a CS for a price I couldn't refuse, so I went for it.

If I'm packing a Super Tool 300, the CS comes along for the scissors, nail file and tweezers, which on my sample, at least, is no problem to access. The blade does have a badly placed nail nick, especially annoying because it was done for cosmetic reasons only. That's no big thing for me because I rarely use the blade, but still! :grumpy:

With a bit of practice, I find the bottle opener works well enough, for me better than nothing because I never mastered the Bic lighter trick. As a carabiner, it works okay, but only to suspend the CS from a key ring attached to a belt hanger into my pocket, so there is no danger of loss. I don't like to hang anything from a belt loop by carabiner.

Only time will tell how well it will hold up, but so far I like the CS, find it a good replacement for the S4, but only because I have the missing implements covered by whatever else I am carrying. For solo carry when going minimal, I would prefer something else (like maybe an S4 :D ).

I'm with you on the PS4, which doesn't suit me at all :( . Those dinky scissors are no replacement for the ones on the S4, and that's my main use for these micro-tools, of which I still think the Micra is best of breed.

Hey,
Thanks for the responses! I think I'll go check it out again before I decide on whether I pick one up. Perhaps I'll get someone to get it for me as a birthday gift or something XD

@znapschatz: Thank you for the comparisons to the S4 in particular; that's really helpful to me as a user of the S4. I'm not abandoning my S4, but I kinda want to keep mine in decent condition for the sake of keeping it because I absolutely love it (your wife made a good choice lol!) If the Style CS seems to be a reasonable replacement, I'd like something that I can lose and not be upset about.
