Has anyone checked out yhe Ecco? It looks great, but I wondered if anyone has any opinions on it? Does it have a pocket clip? How's the lockup? Is there any risk of the blades opening in your pocket?

I looked at one at a sporting goods store recently, and I hate to say this, but I didn't like it very much. The quality wasn't bad, fit and finish was good, lock-up seemed ok. And, the over-sized sheepsfoot blade would be very handy at times. However, I don't like liner locks, or partly serrated blades very much, and there are no models available without these features. I don't think it had a pocket clip, and I don't think it would open up in your pocket. I really wanted to like this knife, as I like most of what Buck has to offer, but this one just didn't click with me. Plus, I felt that for $40 (for a production knife made in Taiwan) I could get a 701, or maybe a nice German made slipjoint, and have a better pocket knife. If it was around $20-$25, and had a non-serrated version, I could put up with the liner-lock and would probably give it a try.

I like the looks of it a lot from when I've seen on the web, but haven't had a chance to take an up-close look at one yet. I think it really bridges the gap between modern knife and traditional slipjoint pocketknife. I.E. this is "not" your father's pocketknife. Are they really made in Taiwan? :(

mnblade,

No, they're not from Taiwan.

The first batch were made by Sakai in Japan. Unfortunately for us we ran into some problems with that whole thing..., yada yada yada..., now we're making them here under our own roof.

It's a good solid knife - with 5 handle rivets you can't go wrong.

Well, I had a chance to view a display model today at a local shop. It was made in Japan and it is well made. I do wish it had a pocket clip though. Although it's small, it feels solid in the hand. I really wanted to get one, but they were not in stock and the vendor does not sell their display models.

Right, the one I looked at was made in Japan. Did I say Taiwan?:o Sorry about that, Pete. It just doesn't pay to look at things with your 2&1/2 year old running around the sporting goods store. Real bad for the concentration. For a Japanese or American made knife, it would be a good value. I just wish it wasn't partly serrated.

greetings, i have one of the Seki version Ecco's and i love it! excellant lockup and quality.no chance opening in your pocket. for my own ease, i carry mine in a small camo sheath.
as to now being made in el cajon, great! now that would make a varient and a start to a collection.
