i have heard some of these lately..feel free to add your own.
"wouldn`t it be easier to just go to walmart and buy a knife ?"
"watching damascus being made is like watching grass grow!"
"why would i want to pay that much when i can buy a knife that looks the same at the
store for half the price"

these are just some that pi$$ me off!!

i keep grinding and grinding and it is still too short!!

Yeah, here's some more:

"What's it for?"
"Are you going to kill someone with it?"

Just makes you want to shake your head.

P.S.- I'll have to admit, though, that having just watched a several hundred layer damascus
billet being welded up this past weekend wasn't quite as bad as watching grass grow, it was more like watching golf on TV.

I don't know -- ignorant people don't even register with me. Or if they matter to me at all (like if they're a family member or really cute) I figure it's an opportunity to try to teach them something about pride of craftsmanship. Of course, that doesn't always register with them... So then I go find someone worth my time. These doofuses aren't worth the stain in their shorts.

Cool Dave! I feel like the guys at my job shake their heads at me everytime I start cutting a new blank out at my job. Lets face it most people have hobbies such as racing, golf and such. They just do not understand why someone is wasting their time with knives unless they are good enough to make a living at it. For us begginners who are passionate about it but make little money if any most people just do not comprehend it. Hey Dave, you can also get knives at super K-Mart!!! Let's go check them out buddy!!! And the ever popular:

"Is that sharp?"

I always want to say: "Why no, I've found a particular niche in the market, making oddly-shaped hammers!"

Here is a classic:
The knife has your name on it and you have a name tag on with the same name as on the blade of the knife and pictures on the table of you making a knife then the person looking at the knife looks at you and ask's "Did You Make This Knife"
or the popular "I see that you have put YOUR NAME on THIS KNIFE "
or "I would like to come and watch you make a knife some afternoon"
and then " This knife is to PRETTY to use,and then they turn around and buy a Pakistan knife from the guy selling $3 pieces of SHI## next to you,and then ask if the knife they just bought is any good."
And my all time worst:
A guy comes up to you with a packistanian bowie and asks"Can you please put a guard and handle on this like the ones you have on yours, and you can put your name on it when you are done" (Yea Rite) answer to this question is I will make you a knife for the same price or it will cost you $300.00 for me to do this with out my name on the blade,And they look at me like I am crazy and say that the knife isnt worth that much,And I say "My point Exactly"
I always try to smile and be polite to these people as I figure most don't know any better but sometimes I just have had enough and finally quit smiling and start growling...Like at the end of a two day show with no sales but allot of these type questions....This is why I no longer do the Gun Show circuit...
Sorry to Vent here,
Bruce

A couple more:
"Who Chromes your blades for you"
a person tells his buddy
"I seen on like these last weekend at the flea market for $10.00,why is his so high"
A guy wants to show you his Bowie that he says looks like yours and he whips out a Pakistanian Bowie!!!!

And some shows it seems that everybody that is there has a friend of a friend that makes knives like yours but cheaper!!!
I could keep going on but I better quit taking up space and let somebody else add some.

Common questions and statements:

Where do you buy the blades to make these?
Do you buy the handles pre-made?
How many of these can you make in a day?

A guy picks up a blade with a nice 600 grit hand rubbed finish and say's "This would look real good if you buff out all those scratches".

A guy who supposedly collects and knows all about knives, looks at this one, points to the temper lines with a disapproving look on his face, and say's "What happened here?"

How many hours does it take to make one of these? That question usually follows the one about price!!!
Could you hold this one for me, I'll be back in a little while to buy it

I am in the process of making a board with a knife in process. From rough blank, after Heat treat, rough assembly to finished blade.
That should help answer alot of uneducated questions.

I really like the looks of your knives, but they would be nicer if you made them like ________.

Those handles look just like the plastic on my knife, while looking at a nice piece of stag or bone.

How come you don't make some knives like United Cutlery? I like those really fancy futuristic designs!!!

You want HOW MUCH for that Piece of Damascus?!?!??!?

And guys I don't consider myself a knife maker. I have made a very few for friends and family over the years.
The things above are what I have overheard at Gun & Knife Shows and They Pissed Me Off!!!

Kudoes to all of you for your patience when I show up right after one of these numb knuts.

YOU made THIS?... how?
well lets see, I bought 4 different pakistani knives and started swapping parts

A knife isn't a knife without serrations.

The plastic handle looked better than that, whats it called again?... oh yeah rosewood.

who cares if its that sharp, that makes it less durable.
