Comp-lock problem?

Hi guys... Since I realy liked my PPT, I got myself a second Spyderco a week ago. My choice falls on PM2. I'm very pleased with the concept but I think that I have a problem with the comp-lock. Out of the box, everything was realy fine, but after a week playing with it, the knife is becoming hard to open one hand. The knife didn't see any action except opening and closing. I didn't take it apart and I didn't tork any screw yet.

From what I feel and hear, it seems to have some friction between the little ball fixed on the lock and the blade around the pivot. Also, that little ball seems to keep the blade locked close, but kind of very locked. Since the last days I also noticed that the comp-lock seems to stop his way a little further in the locking way... Do you think that situation explain why there is more pressure and friction between the lock and the blade?

Positive point, with that, I realised that a comp-lock knife can be opened and closed by applying some pressure on the lock and flipping the knife. But I would like to make it easier to open with the standard method.

Do you guys see any problem about that? If so, what would you do?

Thank you!

Ps. Sorry if I do some errors in my text, i'm french speaking.

I had the exact same issue with mine within the same time frame.

My Para 2 was my first Spyderco purchase and I wasn't comfortable tinkering on it myself, so I contacted support and shipped it in for review/repair.

I had it back in hand in less than two weeks and it was, and continues to be flawless. I don't know if they replaced the bushings or simply worked some voodoo, but the deployment and compression lock are both butter smooth with zero blade play.

I can hold the knife upright, actuate the lock and the blade literally drops right into the handle.

Have you tried lubricating the pivot? Do you have a Torx wrench to adjust the pivot? I usually adjust the pivot on new knives and put some thread locker on the screw to keep the adjustment. I like teflon tape which is usually used for plumbing. Take one pivot screw out and put a couple wraps of tape and put the screw back in the knife and repeat with other side. Then adjust the screws so that the blade opens fairly easy and doesn't have any blade play. As the knife breaks in it should get easier to open and close. As the knife breaks in you can adjust the pivot to your liking and so there is no play. Without seeing the knife its hard to tell if there is a problem but there isn't a lot to go wrong. The above 2 things can make opening the blade easier though while the knife is used and broken in.

Mine just did the same thing. I've had it not quite a week and about an hour ago I went to fondle it and it's become stiff to open. Feels gritty, but it hasn't been out of the house, or used at all.

So what you did? Sent it back for repair?

You can try lubricating it with something good like Tuf-Glide or Militec and try to re-adjust all 4 pivot and stop pin screws (both sides) to try to improve things. If that plus some more wearing in doesn't solve the problem, I would send it back for warranty service.

It called good juju, not voodoo ;)

That is a bummer on the knife, but that juju is good stuff.

Problem resolved!!!
It seems that I found a very little piece of metal in between the comp-lock and the G10 slab... so the lock wasn't able to fully action...

Now I just have to find the right way to ajust the pivot screws... I got some little side-to-side play.

I took the knife apart to clean it up... but now, I got some side-to-side play... that can be resolved if I tight the pivot screws enought, but it's harder to open. Would teflon tape help me out?

fine tuning the pivot tension would help and teflon tape or loctite would help to keep the correct setting.

if you are in france you can find some "sader expert - blocage vis ecrou" in GSB. it's equivalent to blue loctite.

Also the balance between the pivot screws adjustment and the stop pin screws adjustment is important. That's why I said to play around with all of them when trying to get the adjustment fine tuned.
