Here’s a smaller version of Claudio Sobral’s Black Bull series (7 3/4” blade on this one, OAL just shy of 13”), incorporating a finger choil for choking up, and using the handle from Black Bull III as a model (shorter guard than on his more recent pieces). This is his standard Black Bull construction—san mai 420/1095/420, stainless guard, one-piece polished black linen micarta handle.

Claudio was very accommodating, submitting sketches and working with me to get the particulars and proportions I wanted. Turn-around time from initial order to completion was impressively quick, with a smooth, simple Paypal transaction and seamless International Express Mail shipping which included USPS tracking from Argentina.

Enjoy…

Thanks for posting that, Fernando--I think my photos timed out. And thanks, Claudio, for the photos and por un cuchillo magnifico!

This design brings together several aspects that interest me. First, the extra-broad blade adds weight in the forward part of the knife without adding thickness, for improved light chopping. I learned this from Dan Koster’s Monster Nessie design, which is a chopping fiend for its size. Claudio’s knife has a reduced tang and shorter blade, making it lighter and more belt-carry-friendly as a camp-and-trail knife, and his handle contours give excellent security and control.

Also, I love Claudio’s blade construction--1095 core in a 420 stainless sandwich--seems a very practical way to get a real bump in toughness/durability with good edge-holding and a significant upside in reduced maintenance on the stainless flats. Not to mention the handsome high-contrast finish Claudio puts on his blades.

Super nice piece—thanks again to everyone for posting.

Claudio does incredible work. He's definitely hit a great stride here lately, making one brilliant knife after another. A fine acquisition, Will - thanks for sharing

Wow...that is just sick. Absolutely gorgeous, and their are assault rifles that are less intimidating.
What a formula. Claudio has this nailed down tight.

Claudio is one of the very best.
Glad you have at least one of his creations, Will.
what's the stock thickness at the ricasso? I'd love to see a spine shot.

Very nice to see my Black Bull's "little brother" ;)

Yours was my inspiration, Geir--thank you.

Lorien--
Thanks for your kind words--great knife and not dainty in the least. Stock thickness is about 9/32" (.28" ?). My calipers seem to have escaped temporarily. Maybe Claudio could specify for us. Quick and dirty iPhone spine shot:

thank you Will :)

Will, your post always get my attention. I really like your taste for blades. This is no exception. Your choices in build were well made. A tremendous result. Claudio having this nailed down was an accurate statement by w-boy. Enjoy this one!

Very kind of you, Joe. We obviously share a lot of the the same taste in blades, and Claudio's work is no exception--thank you.

Hadn't checked in for awhile, and it's nice to see so many old friends show up to post--reminds me of what I've been missing. I'll have to get by more often. Thanks to all for posting.
