for field use, would like to have something small/light- 2 or 3 grits of paper along w/ leather/compound

anything available or is this going to be a strictly DIY?

if DIY any ideas? :)

For DIY, an altoids tin with a piece of thick leather glued to the outside, loaded with stropping compound, works great. Cut some scraps of sandpaper to store inside - to use, wrap the sandpaper around the leather and close the tin to hold it in place. Using leather instead of a mousepad, you've also got a handy strop to finish it off.

A DIY project that is my favorite!

i just take a paint stirrer, glue a piece of leather on one side and a piece of dense mousepad on the other whereupon I glued a strip of 600 grit wet-dry which by now it is probably up to about 1000 or so. You can cut it to whatever length suits you.

I use KSF's field strop loaded with compound (BRKT black on one side, green on the other) and strips of sandpaper in a ziploc. I find it easier to hold and manipulate than the paint-stick strops in the KSF vids. (ETA: and it packs better)

I tried the whole altoids tin kit thing and it didn't work for me. The lid was too flimsy and didn't give me a flat surface to work with. Love the concept though.

A tip if you decide to go the altoids tin route - glue the leather or mousepad to the BOTTOM of the tin, not the lid. The bottom of the tin is sturdier. You can still close the lid on the paper to hold it in place.

I think I tried both ways, but maybe I didn't. Going to have to give it another try tonight . Here are pics of Siguy's altoid tin set-up:

Another option I found when I first researched this question: the "Hoodoo Hone."

great ideas :) the one in the video really has some thought into it- wow

what do you recommend for leather? are certain leathers better than others? thickness?

here's what I ended up w/- pretty easy, small paint stirrer- cut to size, glued a piece of leather to one (green compound), glued a piece of mouse pad to the other for sandpaper (have a small piece of 400/600/1000/1500/2000)

small and light- just what I was looking for!

a rawhide glove between your thumb and some wet and dry sandpaper... 1500 and 2000 grit. 2000 grit if used right will put a shaving edge easily on your blade. It's what I use for field sharpening and works like a charm-weight is maybe a gram.
