Compact Sharpner for Travel

If you can free hand sharpen, the Spyderco double-stuff ceramic pocket stone works very well.

fiskars keychain course/fine ceramic sharpener about 1.5 inches sq and does a good job. cost at target in camping supplies 1.99

The Spyderco Double stuff is good, but I'm way out in Sweden this week! Sundsvall that is, and I opted to take along the Spyderco Profiles, very good sharpening tools and the leather pouch they come in works well for a strop also!

Like Frantium said: DMT double-sided Diafold is about the right size and versatile enough for most one-tool-only scenarios I can imagine. If you need something even smaller than that, get one of the keychain sized DMT mini sharpeners.

I prefer these diamond sharpeners over ceramic for three reasons:

1. They don't need to be scrubbed to regain their effectiveness after they get loaded up. Just rinse them in water every once in awhile while sharpening; and even that isn't absolutely necessary.

2. They come in coarser grits. You can actually reprofile a blade if necessary, using the blue DMT Diafold. Black works even faster. Much faster than any ceramic sharpener I'm familiar with.

3. The diamond sharpeners don't break or chip if you drop them.

I would like to second or third what Frantium said, to include the coarse/fine style of Diafold. For the price, compactness and durability these DMTs cannot be beat>

DMT diafolds work well for all of the above reasons. There is also a neat little credit card size diamond sharpener from Hewlett MFG size is about 2" X 4" and about .0625" Thk. for about 10 - 12 dollars. Also EZ lap model M is a nice sharpener if you like rods.

Shrike,
The DMT diafold and Eze lap M round are the best field sharpeners I have found.
Let us know what you choose.

One voice more for DMT Double Sided Diafold in coarse/fine grit if you have no serrations and/or recurved edges.

If you do have one or/and another think about:
Eze-Fold folding sharpener from Eze-Lap;
DMT Diafold Serrated Knife Sharpener.

Don't disregard also diamond folding steels from both Eze-Lap and EdgeCraft, first comes with handy leather pouch and second - with pen-like pocket clip. Both work well on normal and recurved edges.
