How's this for a departure from knives? Who makes the best comact umbrella? I mean nearly indestructable, keep you dry in a driving rain, won't fold up on you, compact umbrella! I had a little totes and the shaft came apart leaving a very compact umbrella without a handle and a funny looking rod. So now I want the best thing out there.

Tough question. Have you tried a search on say, www.google.com for "the best umbrella"?? That might narrow your search. The one I have is nice, auto open and close, but it is not very sturdy. Good luck.

Yep, google, dogpile, mamma, etc.

If anyone has any experience with the Gustbuste Metro, looked good on the net, I might get that.

I have had a Mont-Bell for years. The model that I have is tagged "Ballistic". It is 10" when folded and very light and compact. Eagle creek makes one that is heavy duty and deploys very quick. It's a bit bigger and heavier.

The best umbrellas are made in England with Fox frames. Fox itself makes their own which you can check out at rjroyal.com; for the compact model click on the telescope umbrella box. The Cadillac (or Rolls) of umbrella-dom is the Brigg, now under the Swaine Adeney & Brigg name. You can search in google--type brigg umbrella--and see their full-size offerings and a description of how they are constructed, but for a compact model check at hammacher.com and again type brigg umbrella in the search box for a model that won't give you sticker shock. Hope this helps and Merry Christmas.

I don't know about best umbrella, but I personally like those umbrellas that fold up flat. I don't like to cary around too much stuff so I like to stick one of those in my back pocket, I think totes makes one. However, the darn thing doesn't stand up to much abuse. Add a lot of wind and the thing flips out. NJ weather... yes. OR weather, no. Then again I haven't found an umbrella that won't die in a lot of wind.

Well, I love my Totes "Big Top" folding umbrella. It's automatic open/close and made of fiberglass and aluminum. Very lightweight, and opens up HUGE. The fiberglass is used in the outermost portion of the spoke and adds flexibility and durability. Only cost me $17 at a Totes outlet store.

I even got one for a co-worker who was a non-believer in $5+ umbrellas. He was in such awe, he decided it's too nice of an umbrella to leave in his car.
