Getting an 18" kukri in later this week and wanted to know what others with more experience think about a companion knife and if you need one beyond the karda. also how large is a typical karda? what would you pair with a kukri? I guess mostly I just want to see what others carry with theirs and why.

SAK Farmer on my belt or in pocket and a Mora 870 ranger banded to the Kami medical fund sheath I got with my KVLUK. No karda.--KV

Thought most would say something in the mora range. was thinking about getting a puuko from the ragweed place but unsure which brands are good as I havnt seen most of them in person. looking to keep it under 50$ on this one as I've already exhausted most of my spending money for a while.

I'll jump on the Mora bandwagon. The karda is usually quite small, perhaps 2-3 inches. While you can do plenty with a blade that size, I would want a 4-5 inch companion blade myself. Pretty much any Mora will do, but I'm rather fond of the Mora Bushcraft. It's slightly larger and thicker than most Moras, and has their great Sandvik stainless so you don't need to worry so much about maintenance. Still under $50. They also make a "Bushcraft Survival" model, which is the same knife with a ferro rod strapped to the sheath if you're into that sort of thing.

Edit: Fiddleback Forge makes really excellent knives, but they're way out of your $50 price range. Mora makes the best budget puukkos that I know of.

ah oops mistyped there meant ragweed not fiddleback... sorry. much understood why fiddleback charges what they do.

Ah, that makes more sense. I've heard great things about Ragweed Forge too, though it can be a bit of a pain to get your hands on one since most (all?) of the major knife dealers in the US don't carry them.

If the question is replacement of the karda and chakmak for a khukuri, I am going to go with a Ka-Bar Acheron and probably a BK-11 or Izula.

The Acheron sheath will just about fit in the existing karda scabbard; the neck knife will require a slight modification to replace the chakmak.

There are a number of smaller knives that will do the job.

J. Martinni knives makes excellent pukkos and similar blades. I have one of their leukus.

When I hear "Companion Knife" the first thing that comes to mind is the nessmuk trio. I do love the handful of Moras I've accumulated over the last few years- but a lil Opinel 8 might tuck real nice somewhere up in that khuk sheath. Heck- get a mora and an Opie. Still under your $50 price point and then some.
