I've been collecting knives for about 15 years. I always favor the knives that are well-built of high-quality materials, are fun to play with, and that are smaller sized for EDC.
Lately, I have been concentrating on Spyderco, Benchmade, ZT, and Hogue. In my opinion, Hogue's has the best quality, followed by ZT, Spyderco, and Benchmade.
Hogue's materials quality, fit and finish are outstanding on their Mini Flipper and Deka. Every Hogue/Ritter RSK mk1-g2 I've seen has been flawless. No need to see them before buying. The come perfect! IMO
The ZT comes next (IMO). They are super slick flippers, especially their 0562CF! It is an amazing knife! Sharp as hell from the factory! This knife is a keeper! Super fun to play with.
Next comes Spyderco. I love their Para 3 and Para 3LW models. The one complaint I have about the Para3LW is the tiny screw that holds down the wire pocket clip. It doesn't have enough surface area to hold the wires in place firmly. I switched to a Lynch clip and the problem still exists. Also, I see a lot of out of center blades on Spyderco knives. I like Spyderco knives because they seem to have more personality than the others...IMO I really like their compression lock models. Just be prepared to send them back
Lastly, come Benchmade. I have a bunch of very fine Benchmade knives but I've had to carefully select them before buying them. There are all sorts of issues to look out for, including, uneven sharpening side to side, out of center blades, and very tight action that is not easy to get right (because small turns on the pivot screw have too large of an impact on the tightness of the action. Perhaps the threads are too course.) I just received my custom ordered Mini Griptialian that cost me well over $200 and it had all these above-mentioned problems. I sent a note to Benchmade and I got no response... they don't care..
What do you guys think about these company's products? Do you agree that Hogue is top-notch? How does Spyderco compare to Benchmade?
as a knife nut, its fun to think about this stuff...
