Just wondering if there is someone who has an opinion on the pros and cons of these knives. They seem similar to my untrained eye.

thanks!

I have no opinion on the pros and cons of the Tops Tex Creek (just because I've never used it). Looking at the specs I can guess a few things though. However, looking at them I can see why you'd compare them, as they look very similar.

  • The Tops is a 1/16 thicker blade (3/16 vs 5/32). This should mean that the Becker will slice a bit better, as it is a thinner overall profile. But it also means the Tops might be more robust.
  • The Tops has... more of a drop point blade profile (actually, it barely drops), with a swedge. The Becker has more of a traditional clip point with a swedge. End result is the Becker should be more pointy, at the expense of some tip strength. Oh, and the point is lower, so its more inline with the center of the handle. This should make it easier to drill with, if you're worried about that.
  • The Tops comes with a leather sheath, and micarta standard. The Becker can have both of these added, but they will cost you some money (the factory micarta scales are ~$35).
  • The Becker has slightly different steel (1095cv vs plain 1095). Most would say that 1095cv is "better".
  • The Becker costs less than half of the price of the Tops.

If it were me, I'd be buying the Becker. I feel like I don't need that thick of a blade in that small of a knife. I feel like the things that the Tops has "over" the BK17 are easily added to the Becker if I wanted them, so the value is higher in my mind. I also love how comfortable the BK15/16/17 handles are , and while the tops might be comfortable, I KNOW the Becker handles are (that argument doesn't work for you though, unless you already own one :p).

Good luck making a choice :).
