How does the Buck/Mayo compare to the real TNT(of compareable size) in these areas: 1.Are indiviual handles scales as thick(not the total width)? 2. How about total length and total width? 3. Weight. 4. Blade length? 5. Number of holes in handles? 6. Is the blade opening hole finished better on the real one? 7. Blade thickness? 8. Are current owners happy with the Buck/Mayo? 9.I know it is hard to predict the future but do you think the Buck/Mayo will hold its value or someday will you be able to get it for under $100.00 Thanks!

How does the Buck/Mayo compare to the real TNT(of compareable size) in these areas:
I'm going to base my answers on a very small owners group. Me. I have a 172 and a Large TNT. I might be wrong though I think the 172 is based on a medium TNT 3" blade and I believe 3-5/8" is the large. I'm sure Tom or someone else will correct me.

1.Are indiviual handles scales as thick(not the total width)? The 172 is thinner, more in line with some of the flat scale TNT's Tom has done
2. How about total length and total width? Well...my large is bigger than a medium
3. Weight. Again, the custom is bigger and heavier
4. Blade length? See above.
5. Number of holes in handles? There are more holes in the Buck.
6. Is the blade opening hole finished better on the real one? I think the custom has the edge, but, both are good.Inner hole finish is a new category for me.
7. Blade thickness? I think both start out at 1/8" the Buck has a high hollow grind which leave the blade thinner and perhaps a bit slicier.
8. Are current owners happy with the Buck/Mayo? Based on my survey. The 172 finds it's way into the owners pocket more than any other knife.
9.I know it is hard to predict the future but do you think the Buck/Mayo will hold its value or someday will you be able to get it for under $100.00 Thanks! If you watch the exchange you might find it.
Initially I thought the 172 was pricey. The more I carry it the better value I think it is.

A great question, especially since Buck has done such a fine job with the 172. The customs feel more svelte, "melted", and ergonomic than the production models. Blades are generally stellite 6K or Talonite instead of S30V. You can definitely tell the difference. Is it worth the difference in price? That is an individual matter, and for me the answer is yes.

I own both the Buck 172 and a few Mayos, both of which I consider good buys.
