Comparing fixed blades...

I was looking at getting either a Spyderco Fred Perrin Street Bowie or an Al Mar Operator and wondered if anyone had experience with either blade. If anyone has handled both and could compare them I would greatly appreciate it. The intended uses would include EDC, self defense, and camping (assorted outdoor uses). Thanks,
Chris

Hm...
I've handled the Perrin, and I think it would be great for EDC, self defense and camping, given that you don't use it to chop. It would probably could deal with some light chopping, but you couldn't really use it for harder chopping. I'd think it would make a great camp kitchen knife besides the uses that you've indicated.
I haven't seen Al Mar Operator, but I'm interested.
This will sound repetitive from me (because I like the Becker), but I'd think the Becker BK7 would be a steal for self defence and harder camping chores. Extremely sharp, could take moderate chopping, nice and big (7", they have a 9" version) at the cheapest I've seen $45US... I couldn't wait to lay my hands on them.

I think that both these knives would make a good choice. Personally I prefer the blade shape on the Perrin.

For the money of these two knives you could also take a look at the Busse Badger Attack 3.

For less money you could also take a look at the Swamp Rat Camp Tramp. This looks like it is going to be a very good value, but does have a 7 1/2" blade, which may be longer than you are looking for.

Swamp Rat Knives

By the way, glad to see you made your first post, welcome.

Thank you for the welcome. I already have a Swamp Rat Camp Tramp so I have an acceptable chopper ( i got it just recently and haven't had a chance to use it, but I am very impressed by the balance, blade shape, sharpness, and the handle ergonomics). I still want to get a BK 9 and probably will soon ( I too think it iis a great price!). I also have an Ontario Spec plus knife that is a good size for chopping so that was not a considered chore for theses knives. My first hands off impressions is that I like the knife design of the Spyderco better, but the sheath design of the Al Mar looks interesting as well. Yes, I know I should get BOTH and be happy:) However, I was curious which knife would be recommended most. Thanks again.

Now that I think about it, I could get a CUDA Max 5.5 and have a nice size folding blade (roughly the same size as the other 2 ) that locks up almost as solid as a fixed blade (almost :D ). So, what do you guys think?
Chris

I highly recommend the CUDA Maxx for EDC. It can do anything a similar size fixed blade can do while being a whole lot easier to carry. Mine comes with me everywhere except work, which has a 4" blade limit.

If you expect to be out in the wilderness you might think about supplementing the Maxx with something big enough to really chop, like one of the Beckers (I like the Brute).
