There has been a lot of discussion on the boards on the Browning Ice Storm. Popular wisdom claims it is made by Mcusta, and we are told in several posts just to go in and search for the Ice Storm.
Doing so on one auction site will give up a wide variety of colors and prices, but only two models: the 391 and the 393. The 393 ranges in price from 26.95 up. The 391 seems to be carried by only one source. The 393 comes in a variety of colors (mine is red). the 391 I've only seen in silver.
So, what is the difference besides color?
Both are made with liner locks, aluminum scales, vg 10 blades. The 393 has a straight handle, the 391 is slightly curved.
The 393 has aluminum liner, frame, and clip, the 391 has titanium in these places. both knives ride low in the pocket, tip down.
The blades are not quite identical. Notice that the 393 is slightly broader, and that the thumbstuds are set further forward..
The thumbstuds on the 391 work in the same way as the studs on the new Chris Reeves Knives (CRK+) pocket knife; they make contact with the frame. CRK claims this makes the lock-up much stronger, Works for me.
The 393 blade extends back behind the thumbstuds in such a way that you can open the blade on the seam of your jeans, or on the band of your watch. Obviously, you can also use the thumbstuds.
The action on both knives is absolutely smoooooth. I don't know if Mcusta makes one or both of these; I'd love to see similar pix of Mcusta Katanas I do know that these are great knives for the money.
