Yes, yes... the long blade guy here is very, very interested in a LP L'il Temperance. Unfortunately, I can only work with pics to see if it's what I'd like as there are not any knife store near me.

Can anyone post some pics of the L'il Temp with other common knives (not just spydies) so that I can have a better understanding of the it's size distribution? Also, a close up pic of it's compression lock would be great. I've read about it, and read about it some more, but I can't for the life of me wrap my mind around how a compression lock won't easily unlock when the knife is gripped for use.

Other knives I have for comparison pics are Benchmade axis locks, a Spydie Calypso (really nice), and well, I've handled a bunch so I could get some idea with many other models for comparison.

Thank you so much if anyone can help.

Unfortunately I don’t have any comparison pictures with another knives on the Net right now. However if my medium sized hand could serve for comparison purposes here are some pictures:

Formally the Lil’ Temperance is pretty small knife and at the same time it is really big one. This is hard to describe...
Oppss, here is one comparison with some other Spydies:

And here is how Compression Lock works:

The knife is Vesuvius.

You da' Man Serg! Thank you so very much. That was extremely helpful! There's a huge difference between the compression lock and the liner lock that's not readily apparent on the outside.

Your hand is a good "prop" as I have found from your previous knife reviews that we must have very similar hand sizes. "Generally", the knives you find comfortable I typically do as well (and vice versa for uncomfortable), which is not always the case for other people's opinions.

serg> thanks for the pic of the compression lock... been trying to explain it to my father and he needs a good pic.

OK, one answered question leads to another question. Forget the MBC applications, the LT looks like a great general purpose utility knife that would be accepted in even some of the most restricted areas, like where my in-laws live... ;) How is the consistency, reliability, and handling of the compression lock when your knife gets kind of dirty or mucky from a job, ie cutting stuff out in the garden for example? Is a compression lock fairly easy to clean when it gets dirty or has pocket lint build-up? It looks like there's some nice little nooks and crannies that might be hard to reach without taking the scales off the knife.

As you can gather, I'm a user, not a collector. :D

I've been carrying and using mine for about the past month and a bit. It is in my pocket 24/7 (yes, I sleep with it clipped to me) and here's what I have to offer. It is very easy to clean out when necessary as the back is completely open save for the lanyard hole and one spacer at the rear of the knife. I've had mine greasy, oily and even a little dirty from some outdoor work and it cleans up quite nice. It's one of my favorite knives to keep clean because it is so nice, but it's also one of the best to get dirty. It's easy to clean and doesn't slip around in your hand much even when greasy.

It's my favorite "using" knife. I have a 440V model that hasn't been sharpened in about a month. It doesn't shave clean anymore, but it is still quite sharp. I'm working on a deal to get another as a backup...not that I expect to need it, but Murphy is always around.

BTW, here's a comparison pic with a few others http://www.villagephotos.com/viewpubimage.asp?id_=1682255

I want one of each model of the Temperance Jr. They're high on my want list. Thanks for the pictures, guys.

Thank you for your appreciation, Guys, but – wow! – it lets me to work harder :)

Well, as to Compression Lock properties in comparison with liner lock. The CL is inherently stronger and more stable than liner lock at the same liner thickness. This is because there are a huge difference between the liner thickness ratio to loaded part length. In fact in case of liner lock the liner is also compressed between its opposite end and the blade tang. However in this case this liner length is incomparable bigger that its thickness. Could be illustrated putting vertically thin long ruler onto the table with one end and pressing with the palm onto another one – it bends easily, right? And now try to do the same compressing this ruler along its width – pretty different result, isn’t it?

As to clogging resistance – I don’t see any noticeable difference. In both cases the critical point is the thin space between locking liner and scale. If you do something quite messy like game cleaning there is pretty hard to remove deposits from there and they could cause rust being left there. The rest of the knife could be rinsed with water and air blasted pretty easily, there are little or no difference between liner and compression locks.

If you want absolutely reliable outdoors folder (Sebenza beater, hmm?) it should be built IMO with titanium scales and Compression Mono Lock – there are no thin parts or springs to break, nothing to clog, nothing to rust and so on. Something like 4-inched Ti-Salsa with some properties of Lil’ Temperance, some properties of Military and some more...

I have pretty clear idea how this knife should look and Sal, I’m drooling of impatience to realize these my ideas with SPYDERCO!

Thanks again! Now a question for Mr. Glesser. Are the S30V LP L'il Temps being made yet? I can't seem to locate any distributors that have anything except the 440V versions. Thanks!

You know, the only thing that wonders me is the "hump" in the handles for the ring finger. I presume it was made for an easy retieval of the knife in case you stuck it in wood or something. But how does it feel? Looks pretty uncomfortable to me.
Otherwise, it's an excellent knife and I intend to get both models in a not so very distant future (leaf point for me, trail point for my wife, she likes it very much - and the knife too ;))

Hi Nobody. S30V Lil' Temps are scheduled to begin shipping in late June/early July.

Serg - I agree with you a 100%. The Ti-Salsa would be an outstanding platform for a hardcore working knife. Blade length of at least 3.5 inches.

Sal - I have owned tons of folders. IMHO, the Ti-Salsa stacks up exceedingly well to both a CRK Small Sebenza and the STRIDER SnG - at a fraction of the price.

But...we need a Ti-Salsa with a longer blade to make more sense of all that width.

Well Sergiusz, "Sebenza beater" would be some tough target to achieve. But anyway, a Ti Compression Mono Lock with 4" S30V flat ground blade would be a nice piece to see... AND TO USE OF COURSE!

Hi Serg,

there is a 'rule' for liner locks: when you buy a knife, a liner should be up to the one third of a tang - in order to allow for wearing, etc. A liner coming to the opposite side - is not recommended.

QUESTION: Does the same philosophy applies to the compression lock?

Since I plan to get Lil' Temperance (leaf) in S30V ( after June/July, as Sal said) I would like to know the answer.

COMMENT: I read in some thread (by Sal), if I remember correctly, that an integral (compresssion) lock cannot be as strong as an usual compression lock. In that case I would prefer still titanium, but with an usual comp.lock.

Franco,

Yes indeed, there is no difference at this point.

COMMENT: I read in some thread (by Sal), if I remember correctly, that an integral (compresssion) lock cannot be as strong as an usual compression lock
Nope, I really can’t consider how it could be true. In case of integral compression lock the much thicker part is compressed – how this lock could be weaker?
Please look here, I have posted the picture with close view of Ti-Salsa integral compression lock.

Sergiusz,

In case of integral compression lock the much thicker part is compressed – how this lock could be weaker?

Sounds very clear and logical. However, it would mean that, for example, Salsa and ATR would have stronger locks than Gunting and Lil' Temperance. Salsa has, as far as I know, a heavy duty lock, and Sal said somewhere that ATR only 'approaches'or 'reaches' the MBC lock rating.
Since Salsa, Gunting, and ATR, all have 1/8" blades one can probably compare the strength of their locks on equal basis. My feeling is, from what I read, that only Gunting has a 'true' MBC lock, with ATR's one entering the MBC range, and Salsa stays with a heavy duty one.

Would be interesting to resolve this puzzle.
