I have a small Mirage, and find the ergos a little awkward. the thumb stud is hard to get to, and I don't feel the blade really 'click' into lock. It's locks fine, it just doesn't feel reassuring. It does not lend itself to a tactical deployment using the stud. Does the large Mirage have the same afflictions?

Maybe I'm just a lockback kind of guy? Nothing like that satisfying click of a quality lockback going into battery!

The lock on my large Mirage feels OK, and I don't find it particularly non-ergonomic to open. It's big, though, which makes it a little uncomfortable for daily pocket carry.

I keep my daily carry to 3". Being that the Mirage's can be had so cheaply, I was going to put away a large one for those occasions where I feel like I need a little more.

The ergos of the small, coupled with my distaste for tip-down carry, have me thinking that the large Mirage may just not be the Tactical ticket I am looking to fill.

I think there are better choices, in terms of the overall package, than the Mirage, yes. Although we part ways on tip up/tip down; I definitely prefer tip down for safety (having stabbed myself in the fingertip once too often).

In comparison to the larger knife, the thumb stud on the Apache 2 is smaller than it ought to be -- IMHO. Nevertheless, I really like the knife a lot. Since the Apaches all have relatively long handles, the A2 model has a plenty long enough handle for a full grip.

It has aluminum handles, and ATS34 steel. And its on sale at SMKW for $20. AN altogether better design than the Mirage, IMO. I have all the basic Mirages, and like them, but the Apache has better materials, and a better design for rapid deployment than the Mirage.
