My reflections on the CLB DP Trance and Hyper :

handlecomparison.jpg

The handle on the hyper is 9.5 cm and 10 cm on the Dp. The handle on the Dp has a Zytel slab which is a bit smoother as the G10 slab on the Hyper.

Both feel extremely comfy in hand . The handle on the hyper is a bit straighter as the Dp handle which is tilted downward at the front. Grip on both knives is secure.

The flipper on the Dp acts like a guard and the shorter Hyper grip has a nice recoil area. This prevents the hand from slipping towards the blade on both knives. Next to that on the hyper and DP the but rests against the thick handpalm ridge and so gives extra protection .

The thickness on both handles is the same.

The clip on the Hyper is a lowrider; resulting in 3mm sticking out above the pocketrim. The Dp also rides pretty low at approx 7mm sticking out above pocketrim.

Action on both knives is slick but the hyper is a tad smoother imo due to bronze washers instead of Nytrolon washers on the DP. I think the Titanium Nitride coating on the blade and lockside of the handle also slickens the action a bit more on the Hyper. The flipper pushed combined with a light wristflick also works fast and smooth on the Dp however.
Might be the DP ‘s action smoothens up after more extended use.

The Blades;

The DP supports a traditional droppoint shape and the hyper a slight recurve with a bit more belly and curved tip. The blade shape of the hyper results in a bit longer cuttingedge compared to the DP. Approx 6/7mm more edge. (Messured with a string).

The DP needed a bit tinkering off factory to meet my somewhat anal approach on ‘scary’ sharpness. (It came of factory shaving sharp with a slight burr)
After some quick touch up I was pleased . After initial cutting tasks I lean a bit towards the Hyper in favour to the DP but this is prelimary. Over longer use I’ll get a better opinion which one I prefer. I also changed the edge angle on my hyper to 30 included instead of Dp's factory 40 included. So comparing slicing performance is not on equal terms.
The hyper supports 440 C bladesteel and the DP ( trance) AUS 8. I'll probably leave the DP to 40 included. This will be my beaterboy.

The blades on both have the same thickness .However the dark coating on the Hyper slims the looks a bit . IMO the DP looks a bit more tactical and aggressive compared to the somewhat more ‘sophisticated’ Hyper.

To sum up;

Both knives are excellent candidates for EDC with there 2.75 inch blade format.
Now the DP faces the challenge to battle the Hyper's frequent pocket visit.

Wow nice review man.
I already own a Trance, but now I have to get a Hyper as well.

WHOA!!!:eek:

Excellent review! Thanks for doing one on the HYPER, as this knife seems to be flying under the radar???:confused: Hopefully the recent article in Tactical Knives by legendary writer, Mr. Ralph Mroz will put an end to that! It is a GREAT knife that's why...

Um, but bro...in every pic ya took, I for the life of me cannot see your reflection in the blades???:confused:

:p

God bless and mahalo much!:cool:

Thanks Chad.
Reflections was meant methaforical ;). Those were some quick snaps with poor indoor lighting. I apoligize for the somewhat poor quality especially on the last picture.

I also think the Hyper needed some extra attention. It's a very nice edc. Inobtrusive in pocket . Its small but with much more cutting power as expected from such small folder. It is one of my most used edc's.

Thanks for the review Maarten. I've been putting the Hyper to work lately - it eats up cardboard like a lightsaber!

My Hyper seems to be in my pocket the most out all of my knives :thumbup::thumbup:.

I had started a thread a month or so ago when I first got my Hyper and was very impressed with it. I must say after carrying this knife since then it has become a mainstay in my EDC rotation. The Hyper is a very well designed folder and well made. The edge has stayed sharp with only few strokes on my strop to maintain the edge and the blade has very factory good edge for cutting and slicing. Many knives are too thick to be useful without thinning the edge. My Hyper carries so well I don't even knows it there until I need it. Great design Chad and a good job by Boker and it's China manufacturer. BTW, nice review MAARTEN.

Thanks guys;)

RKH i agree the hyper is very special. However i find this DP very nice and it will sure see much pocket time.

Maarten, I appreciate the photos which are nice. I don't have the tech skills to post pics. I have a Trance Straight/Wharncliffe edge blade that I like a lot. Have a nice day.
