My reflections on the CLB DP Trance and Hyper :
The handle on the hyper is 9.5 cm and 10 cm on the Dp. The handle on the Dp has a Zytel slab which is a bit smoother as the G10 slab on the Hyper.
Both feel extremely comfy in hand . The handle on the hyper is a bit straighter as the Dp handle which is tilted downward at the front. Grip on both knives is secure.
The flipper on the Dp acts like a guard and the shorter Hyper grip has a nice recoil area. This prevents the hand from slipping towards the blade on both knives. Next to that on the hyper and DP the but rests against the thick handpalm ridge and so gives extra protection .
The thickness on both handles is the same.
The clip on the Hyper is a lowrider; resulting in 3mm sticking out above the pocketrim. The Dp also rides pretty low at approx 7mm sticking out above pocketrim.
Action on both knives is slick but the hyper is a tad smoother imo due to bronze washers instead of Nytrolon washers on the DP. I think the Titanium Nitride coating on the blade and lockside of the handle also slickens the action a bit more on the Hyper. The flipper pushed combined with a light wristflick also works fast and smooth on the Dp however.
Might be the DP s action smoothens up after more extended use.
The Blades;
The DP supports a traditional droppoint shape and the hyper a slight recurve with a bit more belly and curved tip. The blade shape of the hyper results in a bit longer cuttingedge compared to the DP. Approx 6/7mm more edge. (Messured with a string).
The DP needed a bit tinkering off factory to meet my somewhat anal approach on scary sharpness. (It came of factory shaving sharp with a slight burr)
After some quick touch up I was pleased . After initial cutting tasks I lean a bit towards the Hyper in favour to the DP but this is prelimary. Over longer use Ill get a better opinion which one I prefer. I also changed the edge angle on my hyper to 30 included instead of Dp's factory 40 included. So comparing slicing performance is not on equal terms.
The hyper supports 440 C bladesteel and the DP ( trance) AUS 8. I'll probably leave the DP to 40 included. This will be my beaterboy.
The blades on both have the same thickness .However the dark coating on the Hyper slims the looks a bit . IMO the DP looks a bit more tactical and aggressive compared to the somewhat more sophisticated Hyper.
To sum up;
Both knives are excellent candidates for EDC with there 2.75 inch blade format.
Now the DP faces the challenge to battle the Hyper's frequent pocket visit.
