I am looking to fullfill a void in my gear, up till now 7"-8" blades have been my max before leaning towards an Axe/Hawk or Machete/Kukri.

I don't want to discuss anything but the Rodent 9 or SYKCO 1111, I would love the ASHBM but for now it is out of my budget.

So looking at the specs the,

R9 has an overall of 15 1/4" with a 9.5" blade, blade height 1 5/8" at 1/4" thick

1111 has an overall length of 16" with an 11" blade, blade height 1 8/10" at 1/4" thick

Seems to be quite comparable in specs one has slightly more handle with less blade, the other vice versa.

Same steel, almost the same price, way different handles.

So who owns/uses these that can tell me about performance differences? Durability? Weight differences? Secondary Use? (like the R9 has what is obviously a more versatile handle) Please include side by side pics if you can.

I am looking at these strictly as a huge chopper, to replace the need for other non-knife tools.

I thank you all in advance for keeping the commentary pertaining to only the SWR9 and SYKCO 1111.

I don't own either --- but I imagine the 1111 will clearly outchop the 9. Yes the 9 should be more versatile because of the handle and because its shorter in blade length. However, ask yourself if you would ever plan on doing detailed work with a 9 inch blade. I think 1111 is the clear choice here for a chopper used to "replace the need for other non-knife tools" (i.e hatchet, axe, saw, dynamite)

I have the R9 but no 1111. It is a beast of a blade, VERY durable, and an even balance give it excellent versatility but (along with the hatchet-like geometry) reduce it's chopping ability, and it is quite heavy for a non-chopping tool. The SYKCO is, by design, a superior chopping tool. Unless the edge geometry is much fatter than the R9 (which I doubt), that is the blade I'd go for. Also, it has a ResC handle

But the R9 is way sexier ;)

Was thinking that myself, but with the overall length being roughly the same, not sure of weight differences (this I think could be the key). It almost seems like there may not be much of a difference in chopping ability with the exception of reach, not planning on blazing a jungle trail just shelter building (chopping what needs to be cut to length)and firecraft(batoning), possible for clearing some shooting lanes when hunting. Kinda hoping someone who has both with post up a few pics side by side.

weight would only be key with regards to "weight placement". The Rodent 9 has a longer handle and a heavier handle. I believe they are both .25 inches thick so that means the 1111 should be considerably more blade heavy, thereby rendering it the better chopper. Blade length also has an effect on chopping ability, even if the tree trunk in question has a diameter that is shorter than the length of the blade.

That is such a good looking knife -- I mean really I never realized how bad a$$ it looks

I have not yet owned or tried a Saber grind, as to the geometry of it I am Newb status. Love the sexy look of the R9, not sure how I feel about Res-C as I have yet to play with it either.

I generally prefer Micarta or G-10, and thought about trying out the Res-C with a cheaper model like a 311, but I don't need another small knife as of yet. This thread will hopefully help me find my way. I have about half of what I need tucked away. I appreciate what you guys have offered so far.

Gotcha, I have never topped the 8" blade length, so a truly large blade and thier effects are limited to only what I have read, with the exception of a few Machetes which are vastly different than what I am looking for. Thanks again Rob for making my brain comprehend.

The 1111 is same size as the ASHBM, only the stock is thinner.
Here a pic of the two and a 1311 as well

1111 is blade heavy, and it is a chopper, you would not want to be doing anything precise/detailed with it. Rec-C handles are a great bonus on a dedicated chopper, make much more sense on 1111 than on 311. Res-C eliminates most of the vibration that would otherwise transfer into your hand, which basically means that you can chop more comfortably and for much longer, plus it is temperature neutral (or even insulating) which means it will not be freezing so can be used with naked hand in winter. The only issue you might have with it is the size of the handle, if you have really large hands it most likely will be too small and uncomfortable.
R9, I don't have one but fondled one, has sort of neutral balance, which means you can use it for other knife tasks (will not excel at them but it's still a serviceable knife) and will work as a chopper in pinch. The handle on R9 would be a more natural fit for large hands than 1111.

Hopefully somebody will be along with both. For another reference, here is a Rodent 9 against a Basic 11 from jazub. The B11 is ~5.5oz lighter than the R9 despite being a little thicker and ~1" longer OAL - that should give some idea of just how handle-heavy the R9 is:

Handle size of the 1111 should'nt be a problem I wear medium to large gloves.

I have been very skeptical of any rubber(ized) stylr handles but so far the concensus is that Res-C is the bees-knees.

Any problems with the tang design?

This is a nice comparison, looks like that Basic has been doing some workouts.

Quite the opposite - being lighter and entirely enclosed (hidden full-tang), the handle design is better able to provide comfort. Noss tried to destroy a Scrapper 6 at the tang, but the Dog was having none of it  It's plenty strong.

I had not realized Noss posted his results here, I have only seen his videos when they were up. I will now have to find some of his other's.

Anyone know whatever happened to this guy?

Cant speak for either of the large blades, but as far as res-c goes I am a big fan of it on the 311... WHY? well it gives grip without being "abrasive," it feels good in hand, and it gives really good comfort when doing hard/heavy cuts, and just general carving. The handle probably shines a lot more in larger bladed applications and I can see why, but I really like it.

Health issues, he was in recovery for a while, and last i read had no intention of going back to destruction testing, but word is that Cliff Stamp is working on a second genesis of the youtube channel.

I prefer the blade heavy balance of the 11-11. I handled the R9 and didn't care for the handles, just didn't fit my hand. That being said, I tried the 11-11 and 1311 and kept the 1311:)
