I'm new to Emerson knives but I like the looks of the mini CQC7A and you guys seem to think that the Emerson knives are the greatest. Can you give me a compaison of what to expect with the mini CQC7A compared to the Camillus EDC 154CM which is now my EDC? I'm interested in sturdiness, ease of use, sharpenabilty, weight and other properties. The Emerson is about twice the price of the Camillus but still very reasonable.

Whaddya talkin' about, Emerson's ARE the greatest! :D I have a
Mini CQC-7 SF, and I love it. It's very easy to open and close (a joy to use). I use a Spyderco Sharpmaker, set the stones at 40 degrees, and angle the knife just a little. It takes a little practice, but it works for me. I don't use it a ton for utility and such, thats what my other brands are for:D! It weighs 3.75 oz., and is extremely solid. Its my favorite, hands down. Get one, you won't regret it.

the best way to do that is to hold one outright.. if youre in the bay area I might be able to show you my commander (no cqc7) or you can go to WE BE KNIVES in Pier 39, or to Tiple Aught Design in Oakland (very near where I work). Nothing beats feelign it for yourself.

For me I htink Emerson knives have a very awesome balance of "charm" (call it hype, image, slogan, mindset or mojo), heft (weight, mass, prescence in your hand), and not to mention awesome design package.

as far as sharpening.. well it's a different fish to skin... but everythign can be done with determination and practice.

speaking only of the commander, I think this has one, if not *the* best handle I can feel in a folding knife. and the wave remote opening device sells itself.

also I think it has quite a bit of fan following. it's a nice place to hang out with people of like minded interests, emerson knives seem to attract a certain mindset.. then again I could be wrong. :)

While I don't have a mini I do have the CQC7A full size I guees you would call it. I also own the Mach1 and the Commander. I like the 7A better than the other two. Sacralidge to some I know, but the 7 is put together and after getting it razor sharp it has stayed that way. The QC on my 7 is better than either of the other 2 also. It is like the "bulldogs" of knives. Kind of small but all heart and muscle. Keep'em sharp

I don't own any of the minis but the full sized 7 is not at all obtrusive in the pocket.

My 99 cqc-7 was my first production Emerson. I abused that knife like no other and it withstood on every level:

corrosion resistance: used it repeatidly while SCUBA diving
multiple dives on a daily basis. Almost no sign of corrosion.

cutting ability: Never needed to cut something that it couldn't. The edge geometry allows for some serious abuse including the big no-no; twisting while cutting.

edge retention: Held up as well as any other ATS-34 154CM. Came back hair shaving sharp.

lock-up: Solid even when I was prying with it  (the other no-no).

AND EKI customer service is the best that I have ever experienced with any company.:D

My two cents. I own two Emerson production knives. A LaGriffe and a CQC-7. Having heard a lot about them both good and bad I decided to check them out myself. The ones i own have no Q.C. issues or any other issues except for being two of my favorite knifes at this time. Suffice it to say the CQC-7 has more or less a permanent place in my right pocket and the LaGriffe makes a lot of trips about town. I'm also looking at getting a Mini-Commander or two in the near future as well.
