So my first experience with RH knives was when i saw Rob at their booth at the CA custom knife show. I had only known the name from looking for titanium pens. Rob was really nice and i decided to enter the raffle with my friend. Met up with some fellow forum members, and zippothisknifethat had ended up winning the raffle and that's when i actually got to touch a Hinderer XM-18 3.5" for the first time. Great looking/feeling knife.

I've been up and down this forum looking for comparison shots of the 3", 3.5" with a CRK small, Umnumzaan. I've only seen a few pictures but the shots were always angled, or didn't get a good comparison. Would anyone happen to have these four knives with comparison photos of the smalls and larges together. I've gone to Plaza Cutlery a few times, but they've never had a Hinderer knife on stock when i went. I wish i could actually just see both 3", 3.5" in person and compare them with my CRK's. I know they're rather exclusive and hard to get, but this is definitely a knife i'd like to own someday.

any strong preferences on the 3 steels they use as well?

awesome, thanks for the link. I would have never thought to check the passaround section for pics. Would you be able to point me in the direction of a comparison of the 3" xm and a small sebenza?

i wish i was around when they were doing the hinderer passaround. it's hard when you only have pictures and peoples words to go by because no shop has them available, and the difficulty in obtaining one :(

WOW

mr clean you rock! That's exactly what i was looking for  Now if only i could get a flipper and non flipper in my hand to see which is more preferable. I'm curious though, after watching the videos, he mentioned how it was fairly easy to open and that tip down would be dangerous in someones pocket for fear of it opening and cutting yourself. Have other hinderer users experienced this when carrying tip down?

I've never carried tip down, but then i'm curious if when carrying tip up and with a flipper, have people experienced their xm opening and cutting there hand when reaching in their pockets? I feel like this would just be a simple tighten the pivot solution, but i've never handled one to have any kind of knowledgable opinion.

Are the spacers on the XM all the same size for the xm18 3",3.5",and 24?

thanks again mr clean for the links :D:thumbup:

No problem! Glad to help!
I think the detent was an issue back in the day and could be corrected already? Rob or Rick or someone else would have to know. Most of my flippers are tip down with the exception of my Yuna but I'm right handed so it's a non issue.

Are you sure you even want a 3? A small Sebenza was too small for my liking, I'd rather have something REALLY small like a mnandi instead of something so in between

Rick sends them out the door tip down for a reason, he prefers it tip down. But, to each their own, you can try it either way to determine what you like, that is what is nice about the XM, tip-up or tip-down, your choice.

With respect to the standard XM series, the blades are all three different thickness, therefore there are three different sizes of standoffs (an isolated exception is the XM-18 3.5" fatty models which use the XM-24 blade thickness and standoffs).

Honestly i don't have a preference since i've only held a 3.5" hinderer. as far as sebenzas, the small is perfect for general usage for me, then i use my umnumzaan for anything bigger. I'm keeping my options open for the hinderers because of their exclusivity i can't really be picky :p since the price is the same for both, i would prefer the 3.5"

Ah, i didn't know that mr. hinderer preferred it that way, very interesting to know. I haven't had the opportunity to try any tip-downs now that i think of it. As far as the standoffs go, i thought i saw on the website that the titanium standoffs for sale would fit the 3.5 and 24. So i was wondering if they just omitted the 3" because it was an obvious that they would fit, or they just aren't available at the moment

Apparently 3" aren't available currently, but I can assure you that there is a specific size for each XM (3", 3.5" and 4").
