Several months back there was a discussion on this forum about electronic compasses. I told ya'll at the time I was working on a compass evaluation article that included the Corsa electronic compass in the mix. Here is the link to it if you'd like to read it.
http://www.jungletraining.com/compass_comparison.htm

It's long but there are about 16 compasses in the group evaluated. There's some good info and I'll be the first to say I learned a LOT from doing this article. Mike

Terrific article! Thanks a lot.

My only problem is that I received it in an odd format that was hard to read. Maybe it's just my 'puter----I don't know much about them.

Thanks again,

DPD

What does it look like? Hard to read I mean. The link should take you to a regular page on our website. Look around at other articles on the website and see if they show up as the same hard to read format. If so then it's something with your puter. Let me know. Mike
ps, Thanks for the interest.

Oh yeah, If you don't click the 'full screen' icon at the top right of your window it will show up in the small window as hard to read. Mike

For me, every other line of text is showing up as about one-third the length of the alternating full ines. We have a computer guy in our office and on Monday I'll ask whether my machine is the problem. Thanks for your response.

DPD.

DPD, Enlarge it to full screen and it will apear normal. What you described is what happens when you view it in a small window.

I had no problem reading the text. I do however have a question.

Unless I missed it (and I will admit, I only read the page 1 time), You never actually said which one would be your all around 1st pick. I understand that some had features that others don't and some performed one thing better than others, but if you had to choose only 1 compass to take on an excursion, which one of those evaluated would it be?

I own Brunton, Nexus and Suunto and would use any of them without reservations. If I had to choose one and only one (it would definitely be a mirrored compass)I'd probably choose the Brunton 8040 that I have made some modifications on like the "v" notch I filed in the top cover and a full mirror without the thermometer. Understand I would base this on the areas I generally need one in-- the wet jungles. I would also get one 'weighted' for Southern Hemisphere use. The Brunton doesn't have the problem with water getting under the capsule that others have and it's very easy to read the bezel markings.

Also understand that with the exception of the Walmart compass, any of the compasses in the evaluation will funtion fine in the extreme jungle environment. This 'choice'is purely subjective for me and some of the other people that participated in the evaluation wouldn't make the same choice. If you asked the Peruvian Special Forces at ESSEL the same question they'd probably snatch the Cammenga without hesitation. Other folks would definitely take the Silva JWA Ranger, Nexus Elite or Suunto Navigator because of their reputation for having worked so well for many years.

Best thing would be to get to an outfitter store or two and get some of these in your hand and see what works best for you and your purpose. If you have friends that own one of these compasses then borrow it for a day or two and look at the pluses and minuses of using it.

Thanks for reading it. I know it's long but read it agin sometime, especially after looking at some of the compasses 'in the flesh'.

A lot of the info will become even more apparent when you can actually get one in your hands. Mike

Mike,

Thanks for your opinion and your honesty.

Thanks for the excellent review!
Did they all handle interferience(sp.) from nearby metal objects, ore deposits,or electrical fields similarly?
Does anybody know who makes the Victorinox compasses?

All the models used in the article exhibited about the same amount of reaction to metal interference (distance from interference when distortion occurs). The only thing I didn't get a chance to try is with a large ore body or very strong field created by large power tranmission lines. That would be a good experiment to run. The Corsa electronic has a warning that comes up on the screen that tells you when there is a 'distortion' due to interference. I don't know who makes Victorinox compasses. Try a search and see what comes up.

There's probably a bunch of compasses out there in the $50 and under price range I missed but they will have to wait until another time and my pocketbook can stand it.:) Glad ya'll enjoyed the article. Mike

Hey Mike,

Send me a private email so I don't have to hunt you down and make you sit with the "Feuding Europeans" in Ruby's again.

After listening to two people argue for the better part of 2 hours about "What is Apartheid?" , I don't know any more than I did about their views. Perhaps it had something to do with distraction due to molestation.:) Mike
