Compass declination rapidly changing...

I read a very similar article. It's very good information to have/be aware of. I still have all the topo maps from when I was a kid. My Dad gave them to me, but I don't use them. I just seem to have a "thing" for maps.

Whats the deal? I've heard some about that but am far from well informed on the subject. Anyone here have the difinitive poop on this?

There is absolutely nothing difinitive about it. There is nothing to support this other than 2012 doomsday prophets. Like I said, California is going into the ocean next year too.;)

There have been plenty of magnetic reversals in this planet's history.

Yes there has been. But the shifts take place over several thousands of years. It doesn't just happen one day or year or decade, or even millenium. It gradually shifts like it always has.

Again, this not being my expertise, I could be wrong, but IIRC, they often happen much faster than that.

The equator is about 40,000km, so I would expect pole to pole to be around 20,000km. I think I remember hearing mag north was moving 40km a year. At that pace we have 500 years to complete a magnetic pole shift. So yeah, theoretically (I would think) it could be a heck of a lot sooner.

But magnetic north has always shifted. The current trend doesn't mean there is going to be a pole shift over the next 500 years. I'm not an expert but I doubt it ever made a beeline for the opposite pole, but who knows?

Where's a geologist when you need one?
