Ok here I am with another question. this time on compasses. I noticed on the ESSE site for the courses a Silva Ranger or Suunto compass was recomended. What advatage does these compasses offer over others. I have this model of Brunton that was given to me . While I'm not taking an ESSE course soon I'm just wondering if investing in a different compass would wise before my course I'm taking in Sept (not ESSE).

It's nice in a class if everyone is using the same or a similar compass. Demonstrations, etc. Some people would show up with a compass that doesn't have the features that come in handy for orienteering/navigation.

Thanks. I thought it was a decent compass , just wasnt sure if the Silva Ranger would be much better. This one has got me through a couple of bad situations while hunting and lost for a few hours. If I didnt have it I'd proabally still be lost in the woods.:D

Ok I have another question. When I see folks recommend Silva Rangers, are they speaking of just the older ones? The reason I ask is after do some reading it seems as though the Silva here in the U.S. are imported by Johnson outdoors and are made in Indonesia. From what I had read the new ones are not nearly as dependable as the old ones. Anyone know if this is true?
