I understand your competition and championships are set up for handle throwers.
Are the length and weight parameters set in stone or do you allow "close enough"? Are there any other factors one should know? For instance, some of the Buck skinner competitions require the knife to be at least marginally functional as a knife, with a sharpened edge, etc.

The knives that we use in competition are a minimum of 12 inches long and no longer than 16 inches. It is to be no wider than 2 1/2 inches and must weigh no more than 25 ounces.

The reason we have set these parameters is so that someone does not show up with a small knife that will tend to bounce a little more than the larger ones. It also keeps someone from showing up with a machete type blade that is real long. We are just trying to keep everyone on an even playing field. After the main event, we will generally hold blanket throws when the limits of the equipment are a little more relaxed. It is usually up to the throwers as to what they are comfortable being around.
At our events, it is ALWAYS safety first!!!!!!. A blade does not have to be sharp. There are other events in out sport that cater to the 1/2 or 1/1/2 throws. We have and will continue to change the rules and events every couple of years to keep the throwers on their toes.
