Hey folks, I'll be heading off for forestry school in the fall and I'm thinking of joining the woodsman team. When I went up to visit the school they said that they could provide all the gear, or you could bring your own axe.
Is there a preferred style of axe for events like the underhand chop or the standing block chop? I'd like to bring my own axe.
 
Munnin42: Which school of forestry will you be attending? A good 'college' axe is a matter of taste and of course, money. Some are using the older Arvika brand in 2kg format, then some prefer Keech, Ox-Head, Tuatahi or the prized Trojan Hi-test. The fraternity of axe-users tends to be somewhat small, but most of the guys will help you out with selection and purchase if you ask them.

Of course, some folks on a budget are just using regular Kelly, Plumb or Collins axes that have great edges and slimmed profiles. Competition axes are heavier and sport various mitre grinds and combination profiles, some of them exceed 7 inches on the cutting surface. An expert on the topic is Doc Jastad. You can locate him by doing a cursory search on www.hotbot.com for further info, and Doc can certainly fix you up with a dandy of a cutter. Alan Boyko (of B.C Canada) is another well known axe man with amazing talents in the sharpening realm.
