ben looking to get a big chopper/ kukri knife or a small hatchet/axe. I have got a ton of info about big chopper knives but little to none about hatchets or axes. It will be an all purpose camp/hunting. it will be used to fell small trees, taking limbs from a tree and processing firewood, maybe a cracking a deer or antelope pelvis. it will be attached to my pack and will go everywhere. meed help and some info please.

thank you

Gransfors Bruks Small Forest Axe. I use their Wildlife Hatchet and love it, but if you want to fell small trees I'd recommend the Small Forest Axe.

Just get you a good vintage one. Almost all the old stuff is very good. I also like the GB's, but for what you are needing they can be bested by the vintage axes at a fraction of the cost. A mask for them can be purchased or made easy enough.

These are all good, True Temper, Plumb, older Wetterlings(SAW), and a no name head. Under $20 all day long.

I'm a heavy machete guy myself for my go to big chopper on the trail. However I really like hawks and hatchets as well and use them alot. If wood processing is your main goal get a small axe. If you like production models the Gransfors Bruks small forest axe is great. If you want an awesome small axe/ hatchet Id look into some of the custom makers on this forum like Wolf Creek Forge. You honestly can't beat a custom.

Garry is steering your right. Any of those would be fine. Find a vintage hatchet with convex cheeks and a good handle. The swell on the hatchet at the left would be the most comfortable to my hand.

Check yard sales, antique stores, pawn shops and estate sales. Or just look on that internet auction site. You pay a little more but it's more convenient.

Too many good makers to list them here. Vintage Kelly/True Temper, Plumb and Collins are all very common and are good stuff.

Another way to go, since you aren't doing major work with it, is a Cold Steel tomahawk. For the purposes you describe, a Trail Hawk would be the best fit, although they make other good models as well.
