Well i finally just finish'ed this one up, it's my first damascus hawk, it's made from a billet of chainsaw blades, and the haft is maple. The wrap is done with a very thin leather, then soaked in resin, and cured.

there are also some copper accented pins holding the wrap on...though mostly for looks, as the resin has bonded it all together pretty good.

thanks for look'en

Looks good! Could you expound on the "chainsaw blades" concept? Sounds intriguing. :) What are chainsaw blades typically made of? How many used? Where did you get the idea? Sounds like a fun story. :)

Well the blades are pretty much all different, part of this in an assumption, and part of this is theory iv'e heard from others I have talked to.

So knowing that I cant know which steel are in the chains, as I used all different types, I eliminated any and all complications in heat treat buy adding a 1080 hc bit into it when I forge welded the hawk together.

Im guessing that there were probably about 6-8 (18-20'') chains in the billet, when you do this it requires a whole lot of reduction in cross section, and the final billed yeilded 2 -9-10'' bars, that were each drawn out to 3/16''x 12'' long, and then wraped around a tear drop mandrel.

It wasn't an origional idea to weld them together or anything, ive heard about it and done quite a bit of it in the past, as well as the bike chains, and botorcycle chains. here is a pic of a knife in the works , it was gonna be a set witht he hawk, but i scratched the idea.

hope this answers some of your questions,

that tomahawk looks like it should be sticking out of some cowboy's chest!
With a beard on top that sucker would be an even more lethal thrower:thumbup:.
The patterns in your steel are very nice, and that long knife is awesome:)

Beautiful, hope you share completion photos of this when done.

heck, im so sick of working on that one:grumpy:, im just about as close as i can get to scrapping it into keychains....lol

forged 3 guards for it, and im not happy with any of them....back to the drawing board folks:D

so its sets on the back of the bench for a bit

I like the current guard shape, good looking damascus pattern and nice handle.
I beleive it need a ferrule/spacer though.
Don't give up on her. ;)

Kevin, for sure, it has one, just not on in pic, all fittings are wrought iron. I agree and like the current guard as well, but i tried to do something different this time, and while forging I hot fit the guard, well it worked, but there is a slight gap, just enough to let light through if you hold it up to a light, so i scrapped it and got to make another one, or take it back to the forge ......got some other thing to finish up, but after i exhaust my rage to destroy this blade, ill get back to it.

sometimes for me the best way to fix a problem or get it right, is to walk away for a bit and work on something else.

thanks

Thanks, thats just another reason, i scraped the whole idea, I guess every knife ya build dosent make it to life......well at least not for me. But I plan to build some more similar designed ones in the very near future.

chawk it up to experience, and move on...;)

I like the blade width. Makes a nice sleek fighter.
Actually think it could turn out to be the best of yours I have seen.
