Went to a knife, and gun show today at the Reno Hilton, and found a large regular decorated Sebenza in a Trailing Moon pattern, and knowing the dealer who have bought many knives from since 1987 gave it to me at his cost as his sales were very slow, and he was just wanting to turn over some money to help justify his expenses for the show having had to travel from Law Vegas. He told me he knew he would make up the loss from me later as I always buy a knife or so from him when he comes to the show at the Hilton 3 times a year.
I had completed my Zulu Trio back 5 years ago buying a Umfaan, regular small, and regular large Sebenza but a couple of years ago I traded off the large Sebenza off for a deal I could not refuse, and was not carrying the knife very little anyway opting to carry the small Sebenza most of the time. The small Umfaan has the Zig Zag pattern, and the small regular I have polished the front scale, and put a sterling silver eagle in the pilot hole to dress it up. Well I eventually missed not having the large so traded a knife for a large Classic leather inlay but did not like the S30V steel over the BG42 so traded it off, and figgered one day would run into another large in BG42, and today was that day as I always wanted a decorated Sebenza but just never found one I liked at a good price til I found the Trailing Moon today, and knew that was the one I wanted. It was NIB, and dated March 29, 2001, and BG42, and when he told me the price at his cost I said I'll take it :D
Then I sent an e-mail when I got home to Gary Graley to make me up a sheath to match the sheaths I had him make me back in 1999 for the Umfaan, and small regular Sebenza, and he said send the new large Sebenza to him, and he would make me a sheath for it so I am happy as a bug in a rug :D
Sorry for the long story but just had to pass my great find, and happy to complete my Zulu Trio again :)

Cool. I haven't read "Zulu Trio" in some time.

It was quite the thing when I first registered with Bladeforums.

No I don't have a Mnandi as for some reason did not float my boat.
The Zulu Trio idea came out before the Mnandi was ever created back in the late 90's, and that was always my venture was to have the Zulu Trio consisting of the Umfaan, small Sebenza, and large Sebenza in any style of graphics or no graphics. At the time to fill my desire money was short, and could not afford the decorated version of small, and large Sebenza so got the standard models, and on the small one put a sterling eagle in the pilot hole, and on the large put a sterling "HD" for Harley Dabidson as I am into, and own a Harley. The only other thing I did to the handle was take the beadblast off, and smooth them up so they kinda looked like a decorated Sebenza. You do what you can afford to complete the Trio :)
This time around I knew I could afford a large decorated Sebenza, and just had to find one in BG42, and a graphic I liked. I still have the small with the eagle on it, and would never get rid of that as bought it from a friend so has some sentimental value plus I just like cuz it is different.
Maybe one day will have a Mnandi just because........

Larry,

Congrats on completing the set,
The small sebbie with the eagle in the pilot hole sounds nice.
A few years back I did the same with a large ATS34 sebbie and it personalized the knife a bit.

here's a pic.
How many others put something in the pilot hole?

That looks really nice, and keeps it from being so plain looking, and that is why I did the eagle.
I am not sure but think I saw this once before right after you did it but could be wrong
I would show you my eagel but being retired(low budget), and cheap I am just a registered member so can't post. :)
Gary Graley will have my Sebbies by Wednesday, and when he gets the sheaths done he may post a pic of all 3 on here if I ask real nice :D

Larry, I think that can be arranged, I'll scan the knives when they arrive, will give you some confirmation as well as show off the neat idea of yours with the eagle.

and nice one with the badge on the handle recoil, I remember that from a while ago, good looking!

I knew I could count on you, and besides gives you a chance to show off your great work :) if you do it after you get my new sheaths made.

Here's LarryLuana's Zulu Trio with his very own customizing on the small Sebenza, installing that eagle into the vacant hole was pretty slick thinking!

It is a great pic of my Trio, and know not much to some on here but is my pride, and joy.
The small Sebenza with the eagle on it, and the Zig Zag Umfaam I have owned since 1999, and just got the Trailing Moon large Sebenza a couple of weeks ago. It is the 3rd large one but the previous 2 were traded off as always wanted a decorated large Sebenza, and was able to finally get one that I liked at a good price.
And when they get sent back will have some great new sheaths to store/carry them in by one of the nicest, talented sheathmakers Gary Graley.
Again thanks Gary :)

Great collection Larry. All this talk of the Zulu trio makes me want to pick up that large Sebbie I've been putting off. ;)

Although I never carried the large Sebenza all that much when I had one, it is just that without not having one, the family of the Trio is not complete. Years ago before the Mnandi it was the ultimate to own the Trio, and guess I am still from that era. Everytime I traded off the large I regretted it later, and swore this time would look for one I really like, and keep this one. Maybe that is what it was I could not find or afford at the time the large I liked. Now feel I have found that one. Regardless I will not break up the family again.
I think if you buy one you won't regret it as there is times you want one a little larger than the small for that larger job, and gives you another excuse to buy another Sebenza :)
Good luck in your endeavor.
