I was digging through some old links and I found this:

Color Photographs From Imperial Russia

The website details how the pictures were made and what their purpose was. I won't go into that here. What's important is just how beautiful I found them to be. Everyone needs to see something wonderous occasionally. It had been a while for me.

I can't help but notice how much the terrain in those pictures of the Caucasus resemble the area around here. Maybe a century ago, before the clearcutting and the shopping malls and the highways, Kitsap County looked like this.

Be sure to go through them all. They're all good. I hope that you enjoy them as much as I did.

thanks, that was really incredible. It is like seeing another time with your own eyes. I want to see more old pictures given this treatment.- it conveys so much more than black and white alone.

thanx for that, some interesting swords and knives there, the ones of the muslims with their ornate swords was particularly colourful, and those of the zlaloust armoury museum were very interesting, especially the series on how damascus swords were produced...

Thanks Satori, I've enjoyed this collection for many years via documentaries and repros, but to have so much available via the web is a real treat. Some of the later images are examples of the first aerial photographs. Cool stuff, but I don't see them on the site yet.

Thank you, Satori. I'm enjoying these pictures greatly. Some of those landscapes....<whistles>
