composite handle material

What exactly is the composition of the handle material called "composite"? Case has knives with both white and black composite handle scales. I have a 1976 Case whittler and a 1973 Boker USA whittler with composite scales. They look like plastic to me. Also, can composite scales ever be confused with colored celluloid?

"Composite" and "composition" seems to usually be a fancy word for plastic. Of course, there are many varieties of plastics that are perfectly suited to knife handles. Celluloid is plastic, a rather primitive kind. I suppose there are many plastics that can be confused with colored celluloid.
