Compressed sponge

I came across a piece of material yesterday. It looks like a thick piece of paper (1/16" thick).

When you add water, it turns into a sponge (about 11/16" thick). The sponge seems pretty tough too.

I'm thinking that a 3 X 5" piece would fit nicely in a small kit and expand when needed to provide a usefull sponge. There are lots of other uses, too.

Is anyone familiar with this material? If so, what information do you have about it? Any comments are appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Steve...

I think what you are refering to is commonly called a "camp towel"

We use them a lot when we go camping.. They work fairly decent,, and all you do is wring them out for drying...They absorb pretty well,,but still leave you a little damp.

The ones we use are commonly used for drying your car off,, they were cheaper than an actual "camp towel"

Hope this helps...

Hi Normark,

I have a "Total Towel" that I got from Brigade Quartermaster. This stuff is a lot different than that.

When dry, it almost seems like a piece of stiff felt (like on the back of a picture frame).

Once wet, it expands into a thick sponge and stays that way. I don't think it would make a very good towel, too stiff.

Is the "total towel" the same as a camp towel?

Thanks

I've had some of those compressed sponges before, and actually carried them camping. Once expanded they work just like any other sponge. I think it would be a good thing to include in a survival kit. It could be used for picking up dew and transferring it to a container or straight to the mouth. They might be OK for certain emergency first aid uses also. Once they expand you can never get them back in the same small space though. I've never bought these sponges before, they were usually promotional things (I had several that said AARP on them!). Where did you get yours Steve6?

My wife was given several sheets at a teaching seminar. They use them for classroom projects with the younger children.
