Compression Lock "Nips"

I had read of people being "nipped" or pinched by the Compression Locks on their Gunting knives, but I have never had any problem with that. But I have noticed that my Li'l Temperance and my Salsa both have a tendency to nip me if I am not careful. I have tried to see just what it is that does this, but it seems to happen too fast for my old eyes to see. Just what causes this to happen?

Understand, please, that this is not so much a problem as a minor inconvenience.

Does this occur when opening or closing your Gunting, or during manipulation? Let me know and I'll try to re-create it, I haven't noticed it.

It happens when the blade locks open. All that's going on is that your flesh is getting pinched between the compression lock bar and the opposite liner as the lock bar jumps over into locking position. It's grip dependant.

I never have been pinched by a Gunting compression lock but I do with the others..( actually I have one reverse image compression lock Gunting & it pinches me..)The Gunting is mirror image from the others..the lock is moving away from your hand in the Gunting..and I guess the way I hold it i do not get pinched.. I get pinched every so often with a mirror image compression lock..no matter what model it is..the is lock moving towards my hand..

BUT I'm sure if I spent more time with the other I'd learn about the pinch point..and not get pinched

My hand is not on the lock @ all..when I open the knife...

wish I could be of more help...ROFL..

This happens to me all the time if I hold the Gunting tight when opening it.

Good point, Boink!

Yes, it happens when I open the other Compression Locks than the Gunting. I had never noticed it on my Gunting, but I do, once in a while, on the others. I have found that a bit of care with hand placement seems to avoid the nips. And I certainly love the security of the Compression Lock!

I hope Spyderco can find a modification of the lock design to overcome this problem which appears to be inherent.

This is a phenomenon that happens only in the beginning with the compression lock. The solution is you either modify your grip, or your finger toughens up in the pinched area. Either way the result is the same, no more crying over a little pinch. I never even notice it anymore.:p

I get pinched by my Lil' Temp when it is in my left hand. Doesn't occur as much in my right hand.

I must be opening mine wrong. I've never been pinched by my Vesuvius. :) I've been carrying it for 6 months or so. Use it almost everyday. No pinch yet.
