Computer Assistance Needed

I'm sure one or many of you are much smarter at this computer stuff than I am and here's my problem.

I just got this new cool Dell computer. Even went and sprung for the flat screen monitor! I'm running XP Professional and I do like it much better than Windows 95, 98, and ME!

However, here's the problem. When I attempt to click on a link that someone has posted nothing happens. The computer doesn't go there! I have a feeling that I need to click on "tools" and then go to "internet options" and change one of the settings. (Possibly active x, or something like that, but then that's another language to me.) However I don't know what to change and don't really want to get this thing all screwed up.

Who can advise me on what I need to do? I'd be tempted to send you my CQC8 with a wave for the help.

Well, ok, I probably won't send it but I'd at least be tempted to!

Thanks!

Sniper308,
I going to assume(yeah...yeah..AssU&me)that It's a brand new Computer with default factory installed MS explorer.

You're on the right track. Go to the 'Tools' pull-down menu to 'internet options'. Tab over to 'advanced'. Scoll down and make sure that 'Always send URLs as UTF-8' is checked on and 'underline links' is checked on to always.

Next come the HTTP 1.1 settings. This is a toggle. Some ISP's are using proxy services, some are not. Try once with the frist setting checked, and try with both checked-on. Also, try with just 'proxy' checked on.

The very best bet is to go to your old machine, if you have it hot, and cross confirm internet options settings with your old configurations. When you spot differences, record and then re-set in your new PC.

I'm not real familar with WinXP, so there may be some new Funky JuJu with that operating system, that I haven't encountered with Win2K Professional.

Good luck,
Seth

also, double check that the links aren't being openned up in a new IE window. (i believe this is default behavior when many messageboards parses an address, like if it sees this: www.bladeforums.com )

under XP, you might not notice that its opening up in another window because instead of having an entry in the taskbar (on the bottom of the screen) for each IE window thats open, XP will have only one entry for IE, and when you click that, it'll expand to the other IE windows that are open.

(if you don't know what i mean, then do this: go to "file->new->window" a few times and watch the task bar consolidate the similar entries. its a new behavior, but one that i really like, since i often have 4 or 5 IE windows open, 5 or so instant messanges open, and an assortment of other stuff open. it helps in those situations :))

if you don't like this grouping behavior, right-click on the taskbar, and uncheck the "group similar taskbar buttons" entry, and click "OK"

Easiest way of all (assuming you have your other machine still operating) is to go into the newer machine and select transfer settings from the XP OS help screen, this writes a CD or floppy (you choose) which you then put into the old machine. This then 'asks' the old machine for it's user settings which it copies. You then put this disk back into your new PC, copy them across and you have a new machine working XP which has your old tried and trusted settings.

Hope you enjoy XP, I've just brought myself a new Lap-Top with XP on it and so far, it's working superb !

Now, about that waved CQC8 . . . . . . . :D

Ok, after a frustrating couple of hours I still haven't figured it out.

I think this thing does have some kind of "ju-ju" on me!

Seth:

I tried what you suggested and they are pretty much the same settings. Changing them doesn't help any. I also checked the old computer and things have changed somewhat on both, so that doesn't quite work either. (Also checked my computer at work and it's different still. (Windows 98).

Hawkins:

We might be on to something here. When I click on the link it opens a new Windows box on the screen but it's blank. What would I do from it? You mention if I don't like this grouping behavior to right click on the taskbar and uncheck the "group similar taskbar buttons. (Where exactly do I find it?)

DD:

Yeah right. Now remember, My first sentence said you're all much smarter than I am! Well it still holds true!

I could probably do as you suggested if I only knew how. I understand your abreviations of XP and OS (operating system). Now exactly where is help for this that you mention?

Thanks for all the replys! The CQC8 still hasn't left the safe!

heres another suggestion, though i've never actually *used* this feature of XP before (i've used a similar feature though):

XP has a feature that allows you to give someone permission to connect to your computer and actually control it as if they're sitting in front of your screen.

if you find someone you trust who might be able to figure it out, you can let them do this.

i *believe* it would let you monitor what they're doing on your screen, and let you kill the connection at any time. give me a few minutes, i'm gonna find out how to do this and test it.

About Remote Assistance

Sometimes the best way to fix a problem is to have someone show you how. Remote Assistance is a convenient way for a friend in another location to connect to your computer from another computer running a compatible operating system, such as Microsoft Windows XP, and walk you through your solution.

After your friend is connected, he or she will be able to view your computer screen and chat online with you in real time about what you both see. With your permission, your friend can even use his or her mouse and keyboard to work with you on your computer.

Notes

Both you and your assistant must be using either Windows Messenger or a MAPI-compliant e-mail account such as Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express.
You and your assistant need to be connected to the Internet while using Remote Assistance.
If you are working on a corporate or local area network, firewalls might stop you from using Remote Assistance. In this case, check with your network administrator before using Remote Assistance.

Yep, this XP has some serious Ju-Ju working in it. Never did get it figured out by myself so I decided to break down and call Dell support.

The support Tech got frustrated when he couldn't figure it out either and he even took control of my computer from the Dell Technical support center and tried to fix it and couldn't.

Finally he walked me through re-loading the software and after 51 minutes of the computer doing it's thing - VIOLA! everything works fine.

My friend down the street bought a new Dell and has the same problem I had. He's on hold with Technical Support right now!

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Snipe,

Does this mean that we should be looking at the Dell website for them to be selling off a CQC8? :p

Glad to know that you are up and running.

Regards,

Ed

Sniper308:

I am also glad to hear everything is working according to plan!

Did I mention to you that I have corporate shares in Dell Computers. As such, I have interest in its committment to success and its devotion to its customer base. Having said this, do you think that as a percentage member, am I worthy of that 8?

;)

Anything to get my hands on an 8! :p

Don- Just send me your 8 for the hell of it :D
Just bustin' balls.
Hope to see you again in Atlanta :D
Donald.

Hey Don, I'm having my own XP issues. I bought and loaded a Logitech rollerball last night and now the touchpad on my laptop doesn't work! With or without the rollerball attached! It's pissin me off.

John

My friend down the street got frustrated with Dell Support and hung up on them! We ended up doing his computer the same as I did with mine last night by re-loading XP and now everything on his is working great also. I'm tellin ya, this XP has some weird Ju-Ju!

Ed: Don't look for Dell to be advertising no damn Waved 8. With all their help they actually owe me one!

Raye: As a Stockholder myself, I've lost enough money with Dell that they owe me a couple of Waved 8's as well!

Donald: You bet! I'm planning on being in Atlanta. First heading out to Vegas at the end of this month for the custom show though. You Going? Liong will be there, as will Eric!

John: Get rid of that trackball. Get yourself the logitech optical cordless mouse! It rocks! That's about the only thing that was working right with this system! Even the flat screen I had problems with!

John,

Is the mouse you brought compatible with XP ? Most peripherals out at the moment will not work properly with it. To get it to work, you need to download the latest XP drivers.

Just a thought ! :D

Yeh, I down loaded the drivers off the website. Nothing.

Had to go buy a big damn book. I'll get this solved.

Don, I prefer a mouse, but wanted something for the car. the trackball works better then running the mouse up and down my thigh. :D Note: I don't drive and "laptop" at the same time :D
