Computer card reader question

Got a brand new Dell a couple weeks ago, and tried out the built-in card reader on it. Worked great for the card from my digital camera (we'd went to the Whiteman AFB air show and had lots o' pics). When I tried to put my brother's card in, I had to reboot the computer to get it to read the card.

I thought you had to shut down the device to remove the card, is that the case? (Which is what I'd done...) Is there a way to reactivate the cardreader so I don't have to reboot every time I use it? I Love Dell computers, but they're instruction "manuals" leave a lot to be desired...

Try hitting the unplug or eject icon in your tray at the bottom. This will allow you to safely eject your card.

I have the same problem. I use the "safely unplug" icon before taking it out, but usually when I go take some more pics and put it back in, it doesn't recognize the drive. It doesn't light up, or show up in the directory.

That's what I do. But when I do that, it 'stops' the device, and I have to re-boot to use it again.

you guys don't need to do that
just make sure you don't pull it in the middle of writing data. Even then it generally doesn't do anything

I use a USB memory stick and card reader many times a day and have never had an isue with data loss. I never use eject and am rather careless when it comes to removing.
