Burned up about your computer burning ? Dell has announced a recall of 4 million laptop batteries after a number of them have started fires. Yes they bought the cheapest batteries they could find .Then they found that like cheap lithium batteries they are prone to starting fires ! At least they acted .

Some engineer(s) is going to lose their job. Didn't they do their independent service-life testing?

I've heard of things like that happening with flashlights being used with unregulated or cheap, substandardly manufactured cr-123 batteries as well.

Yet another strike for Sony. I gave up thinking of Sony as a good name a while ago, and everything since then has only confirmed that. :(

I saw a clip on Fox and Friends of an old country dude that had a dell lap top in his truck and it went boom and burned his truck up. He said dell offered him a new pc and he told em to stick it, he didn't want another dell computer even if it was free.

Since my post it has been revealed that Sony was the battery manufacturer.I own a number of Sony products and I'm very satified but I'm not happy to hear more cases of Sony problems . Trying to become an entertainment company seemed to be the first example of Sony taking the wrong path !

sony is now garbage-
its amazing they have fallen so far,at one time they were the name to buy-

my dell battery serial # is on the list. i'm not worried. i'll probably order a free replacemant, but continue to use my current one. WOW.... a free $100 battery from Dell....i'll take it!!

6 fires out of 4 million batteries does not alarm me. i'll keep using my current one and keep the extra as a reserve. i think i have a better chance of being hit by lighting than having my cell explode.

now....lith ion cells in flashlights is a whole other story. i only use single cell lights now. 2 cell liths in flashlights give me the willies!!

Now I see they were made by Sony in Japan and the manufacturing method could leave bits of metal in the battery which could cause a short circuit and over heat.... The was a recent article about brand names and brand loyalty. Sony was IIRC on top of the list !! It takes so much time and hard work to build a good reputation but that reputation can be destroyed in a short time !

Does anyone know if it's the cells proper or the "Battery Pac" that's the problem? Just wondering if the charge regulation and/or overcharge cut off/protection circuits are the problem.

The old PRC77 radio ran on a lith batt pack - big brick of a thing and you noticed two added to your ruck, much less the radio.
We were always cautioned to check for heat in the battery. Every so often they were supposed to go off due to self shorting.
