I asked some time ago from this forum for input about video games- and as a result, purchased 'Sacred".

There have been many bugs with the game and I sought out a forum to find relief. (to that end, there is a new patch due shortly) But while looking and learning, I joined the Sacred International forum.

Sacred is a Sword and Socery game. It has in its plot a group of religious fanatics which sound like Southern Baptists- "Damnation, hell's fire" etc etc.

Naively, I started a thread asking if any of the other gamers were weary of the typical right wing religious cult stereotype on the game? As a fan of SF for most of my life, I've grown bored with this image. It is repeated incesantly in the media, in SF, in Games, in pop music. Every new Tom Waits CD has at least one song on the same.

To my surprise, my thread was removed as controversial after 24 hours. I wrote back to the kind note sent to me from the admininstrator. If it was appropriate for the designers of the game to provide the gross characterisation of the religious fanatic, why was my reaction to this not appropriate in a forum devoted to the game?

I concluded by telling the administration I would venture no more philosophical threads or abstractions, but confine myself to the 'how to' of game operation. I anticipate my participation will be over very shortly- as soon as the next patch arrives.

Few forums are like HI's. I am reminded of that time in my life where for employment I had to say the 'right thing' always. This will surprise many of you, but I was very good at it.

I believe though, that restraint is a tool used in timing, waiting for the moment when it is important enough to speak honestly. Running directly into the Politically correct again, I see such moments are few and far between.

You're absolutely right. HI is a different breed of forum. You're all not just fellow knife nuts, but good people. It's like a meeting place for friends. We speak our minds and occasionally offend. In the end, though, all flame wars die. We're all cool people and all sort it out. Our willingness to digress from the topic openly is incredible.

The camaraderie, kindness and intelligence of the members here is what keeps me coming back. There really isn't any place like it.
