Thanks

but, the newer iterations of the celeron actually have on die memory making it a better deal than it used to be IMO. I would go with a pentium though myself as they generally have 1Mb of L2 cache as opposed to 256k on the celeron. This allows for faster processing of data per clock cycle (clock cycle measured in mega or gigahertz) than with the celeron.

and might I recommend newegg.com if you plan on purchasing online? they have never done me wrong, have great service and above average pricing. meaning lower than average of course.

if you get a laptop then, imo again, you should go with a pentium-m as opposed to celeron or centrino. the m stands for mobile and is apparently a great, low power consumption processor. additionally, the processor itself is no different from that on the centrino only without the premium added for (on the centrino) intel branded wireless. so, if you want wireless connectivity on the notebook you can usually find the exact same wireless onboard controller in the pentium m models as you find in the centrino- only without the neato brand name and added price.

for what you're going to be using it for you wont see the difference to warrant the heftier price tag. if you can get a good deal and it comes down to it, then of course the pentium.

Hi Ren Celeron is a version of Pent - do not go for the celeron ,not worth the little you save on it .

Intel:
You are buying a laptop. You don't list processor-hungry tasks like 3d gaming, video and audio editing & encodage, etc... I say go for the one with the lowest power consumption (longer battery life).

AMD:
If you plan to keep the laptop a long time and eventually upgrade to a 64 bit OS (they should be the standard soon enough), go for a mobile AMD Athlon 64.
The regular athlons are not bad either. My company got me HP 9550, it has an Athlon-M 2800+. It works surprisingly fast, almost as fast as a Athlon 2400+ for desktops. The real battery life is arround 3 hours, which is not bad.

Ren, the Celeron is the economy version of the Pentium. Do not buy this processor, unless money is a big, big concern. From what I've read, the Celeron develops a lot of heat(not good).

Yeah, a Celeron is a 'smaller' version of the Pentium. The Pentium has a full sized on-chip bus. That means that it can utilize the whole bus for a command. The Celeron only is 1/2 bus. That means that it must take 2 process cycles to execute the same command as the Pentium. They have compression alogrythms that are cheaters to make the Celeron faster that it seems, but still the concept is there.

Thanks for the help guys..now to surf and buy..that is if you bastids would hurry up and buy the knives Ive got posted for sale...

sorry for the shameless pitch..
