Computer help: Burning DVD's

Last month I had to have my hard drive replaced on account of a virus. I now find that I can no longer burn DVDs to the DVD -R discs I had been using (and I have a couple of hundred of these that I got on sale and would really like to be able to use).

It still burns to CD-R. I have been using Roxio to burn whole files. I also tried burning individual folders directly and it still won’t work.

It was suggested that I try another transfer program. Anybody suggest a downloadable (preferably free) program that might work for me? Or any other solution?

Nobody should ever have RealPlayer on their system.

Try BurnAware. They have a free version.

I used to have a free version of Nero, but later upgraded to the paid version and it works well.

Does it give you some sort of error message, like incompatible media? What specifically happens when you try to burn a DVD? Are you sure it's just the -R media that's pitching a fit?

Are you using new anti virus software? The last time I had trouble burning media, I finally got things working by telling Kaspersky to completely ignore the DVD drive.

Other than that, how did the replacement of your hard drive pan out? Did you start fresh with a clean installation of your operating system, or did you have a back up that you used? I'd bet that some driver got left out. Maybe check the manufactuer support site for your DVD burner and make sure you have the latest drivers and firmware (firmware probably won't matter much, but it shouldn't hurt to apply an update if one is available.) Also, you can check for a hotfix that applies to your specific problem.

Can you elaborate?

The last time I used it, it was just a buggy/bloated piece of garbage software, and the only reason anyone ever used it was for Real Player videos. I haven't seen one of those videos in over 5 years, so there shouldn't be a need for it. The only media players anyone needs are WMP and VLC in my opinion.

Is the HD you lost the primary HD, and is your PC a branded product?

If yes, then you should be able to reload the original SW that came with it either via disc, or at least through download. The PC company will have a "support" section for you to access online.

I use ConvertX and love it.

Also, I can't believe anyone still uses Realplayer. That was one of the worst most buggy programs that I have ever seen. I didn't even know it still existed. I have not even touched Realplayer in years, (usually to get it off someone's system because it was killing it), but who knows? Maybe they are putting out a better product now. Doubtful though. I am a geek's geek and no one I know uses Real Player. Most of us use VLC to play videos and specific DVD burning software to make them.

1] If that software worked before it probably isn't the software. Test – download Deep Burner portable. 2] Still no? - Consider an ASPI layer and look into something like Force ASPI. 3] The parts that burn DVD are physically different from the parts that burn CD. The DVD part of that drive could be knackered but the CD part preserved. Test – swap it into a different machine.
