Computer help needed, please.

I have a bunch of desktop shortcuts that I'd like to open "maximized" as soon as I click on them to use that application. Even when I then close the application "maximized" it still opens the next time in a smaller, resized window. Is there a 'default' setting in Windows XP that I haven't found?

YES! Right click on the icon, and go to properties.
There is a box that say Run, and it will allow you to select how it will open, normal window, minimized, or maximized. (Don't pick minimized!)

Another question: why doesn't that work with a desktop shortcut to, say, the sign-in page on my Gmail account (or Hotmail, or any other website)?
