For all you computer savvy guys, can you explain something in low level computerese to me?? It appears that I have been getting TV "illegally" for 3 years. I thought I just got basic free stations so didn't worry much about it. Well, it turns out that the only cable into my house for TV was taken over by cox to run my telephone and internet and now I have no TV because i had a problem with my internet signal and they came out to look and found out I was also getting TV. :grumpy: So they cut that off of course...........my question was how come they can use my cable and not give me at least the free channels for free:grumpy: ........oh, well, that's what i get for thinking.

Now the question............typical female taking 2000 words to ask a 10 word question...........sorry:o

I seriously cannot afford anymore bills so they said I could cut back my internet speed from like 1500 somethings to 500 somethings and not affect my working unless I am downloading stuff. Is that true. What does it mean all these speed things and what is really needed to download Yvsa's emails......you know the necessity stuff.......:rolleyes: Basically can I live with a slower speed internet and then add basic cable so i can get the free channels for $30 a month:rolleyes: Sounds like a scam to me, but then i really don't know what I really need. In reality all I usually do is email, forums and the occasional downloading of video's and pics in emails. The email pics is my primary worry as my kids send me stuff regularily so i can keep up with the happenings in their lives.

Well, any help would be greatly appreciated. I'll live without TV before I live without access to the net and keeping up with the kids. Thanks so much!!

BTW.........I tried a bunny ears antennae and it is worthless. You can hear it, but can't get a decent pic.........modern life at it's best.

I've lived with 1500 and 512. Although 1500 is 3 times faster then 512 your emails won't be effected and I doub't you will notice much difference at all in displaying pictures. E-mails and pictures don't take up much space so you don't have as much to download so its fast anyways. With the downloading of video's there will be a noticiable change as your downloading more. But it still will be fairly fast. If your talking 700 meg movies they will take alot longer on 512 compared to 1500 but if your talking less then 50meg the speed in downloading will still be fairly fast. In probably a month on 512 you will forget the 1500 speed if your downloading vast amounts such as full 700 megs movies. If your only downloading small movies less then 50 megs I doubt you will really notice a difference at all.

I'm one of those blokes looking at 20 web pages with pictures at a time while downloading using other programs, talking on irc and instant messenger programs and 512 is perfectly fine for me :)
 
About 30 people in my company share a 768 connection. I just checked now from my PC and I'm getting between 250 and 300. I think you'll be fine.

You can get by fine without their internet service. Spend the money for your TV service.

You said speed is not important right now.

A Netzero dial up account will cost ten bucks a month for unlimited internet access. E-mail also comes with a Netzero account.

Thanks so much for the help. I'm going to downgrade this and get the tube working again. Not that there's that much on, but I am kind of addicted to Abby on Tuesday night:D
 
You remember the 'old days', when you had a modem that made screechy noises? Well, what they are offering you a a 'slower' service is 10 times faster than that. You will be fine with it.

I have only just upgraded from 212 'somethings', (212 mbps).
