Getting an HDTV.

Have older (2005-6) laptop without HDMI.

Any suggestions on getting a good connection from laptop to TV so we can maybe look into something like Netflix?

Have broadband cable & modem. Not sure what options are.

TV is Samsung LN40C630 and laptop is HP DV1411SE if that helps.

One sales rep said SVGA connections.

Thanks in advance kids...

or a 15 pin vga/svga cable then just select pc on your tv for input,,that is ofcouse if you comp and tv both have the 15 pin "female" plug, should be blue

They also make stand alone boxes that will play Netflix, the PS3 does too.

Roku has one of the least expensive set top internet boxes:

http://www.roku.com/

which will allow you to watch streaming NetFlix vids as well as movies from Amazon and more.

There other other brands available, like Western Digital which cost more, but offer more channels.

Couldn't find the specs on your TV. Only the ones with Hdmi. I would assume you have DVI? Connect that to your laptop. Get a Turtle Beach Micro 2 so you can hook sound from your usb to optical to your tv. Well if your tv doesn't have opt then a composite yellow would work. If you have a receiver you can hook it up easier. I wouldn't get something else just for Netflix. Your laptop will work fine. Unless you want an XBox or something. Pretty easy to do.

If you have a VGA output on the laptop, you can get a VGA-Component adapter. Both connectors use the same RGB channels to produce the image.

For audio you can use a headphone (line out if you have it) jack and 1/8" mini to stereo RCA adapter.

+1 on using the VGA out of the laptop into the VGA port of the TV if it has one. I did this for years before I got a laptop with HDMI and it works well.

Your computer has a VGA output and an S-Video output.

Your tv has a wide variety of inputs.

It looks like using an ordinary VGA cable would work to connect the two. You will also need to get a male-male cable headphone cable for sound.

However, you will need to configure your computer for tv out. It may hopefully be as simple as pressing Fn+F5. If not, you may need to poke around in the display properties.

Good luck.

Just get a Blu-ray player with built-in WiFi-----setup a wireless network in your house and run your computer and player off the router. $200 to $300 depending on what you get.(player + router)

Not that much and really simple to setup-----plus the blu-ray will feed surround sound into your home theater.

AND it gives blu-ray/dvd for your new HDTV AND will play CD's in the home theater.

Run a HDMI from the player to the TV---Use HDMI wherever you can-- it really is better.

Don't be conned into buying the expensive HDMI cables at Best Buy----get the cheap ones at Walmart---still not exactly cheap.

Sony PS3 is another option--will give you gaming and Blu-ray----but costs more. You'll still need the router.
