I snagged a 3.5 MHZ cpu motherboard combo with 1 ghz ram, installed, ready to plug in, for 350$

I am hoping I wont need to upgrade again for a long-ass time.
How bout it , computer-guys, did I get a good deal ?

I gave up on whiz-bang. Everything is obsolete before I get it installed. I am currently looking for a way to surf with an Amiga game system.

.

it depends... do you know make and model # on the mobo and processor? and/or the chipset on the mobo and the core (prescott, northwood, etc.) on the processor?

regardless, just given the specs you mentioned I'd say you got a decent to excellent deal. definetely didn't get ripped off.

What roughedges said. I'm an AMD guy myself, but a 3.5 GHz P4 is no slouch either, especially at that price.

Sounds like a good deal to me. From what I've seen while selling computer stuff, buying a bundle normally saves you from $20 to $60 off the cost of just buying the parts separately.

Those new 3.2Ghz and faster P4's with HyperThreading are really fast. Not quite as fast at gaming as their AMD counter parts but still stinking fast!! P4 with H/T is great for Multitasking in Windows. When multitasking it's almost like having 2 CPU's working for you. :)

I'm an AMD man also, but if a deal like that fell in my lap, I'd snag it. Asuming it has Hyperthreading....

Danny, if your not sure of what you've got, just use that HWiNFO32 program again after you get the combo CPU/MoBo installed. Inquiring geeks want to know... :D

What is your bus speed? At 3.8Mhz I bet it is 800ish rather than the older 533.

What kind of video card and sound card are you using... Or is it on board with the mobo?

At first glance it sounds like you've got a nice system. If everything works consistantly and gives you no problems then don't worry about brand names (though I am an ASUS and Pentium man myself.)

Enjoy it.

Do not neglect the sound card. It took me years to learn that one. $40 later, the music got better, the gunfire got louder, and my framerate went up considerably. That was probably the most bang for the buck that I've ever gotten for a computer, ever.

3.5 and a gig of ram? You're screaming. Give it the video card it deserves and you'll be fine. I've been running a 3.2 and a gig for well over a year now and don't see an upgrade anytime soon...of course, my vid card is a 6800 GT. ;) (I like eye candy. Sue me.)

VERY nice. I'm still running a Geforce4 Ti4600 I picked up three years ago in Korea. Hey, it was top of the line then. I paid 500,000 won for it (about $400). Then the Radeon 9700 came out a month later and blew it out of the water. Great lesson in component selection there.

I'm a flight sim and FPS guy. Money spent on video cards is money well spent for me.

For the record, though, I was using a Ti4400 for two years before that. Those cards were workhorses. The folks at Best Buy didn't believe me when I told them that I was running Far Cry on it. :)

My personal computer this past year is
a 300MHz Pentium-III running Windows 98.
About 2 years ago I gave my daughter my 900MHz same
for playing games.
Last month I bought her a 2.4GHz Celeron something
basic XP system for her games.
A lot of new games just won't run on much less.
Then I find a pile of old games that won't run on XP
even with compatibility options.

Slowly I'm juggling 3 old system boxes & some new parts
bought over the last couple of years
to put together a 'New' 900MHz dual-monitor system.
Maybe with Linux; else XP.

Then I'll think about moving that system to maybe either
network storage, or dedicated internet/word-processor,
& get a new 'current technology' system.
Something to get back to photo editing
without the ttumb-twiddling.
:D
