For the computer experts. I am trying to connect an externan monitor to my laptop. The monitor seems to come up just fine until the laptop finally comes to life, then the external monitor says that there is no signal. Any suggestions?

You need to reconfigure your system to connect to an external monitor. In the Control Panel there should be a screen to do so. Look for the Hardware and Sound tab, then the Display tab. With the external monitor plugged in you should be able to select what is displayed on which screen.

Look at your function keys too! Often, there is a key that turns on the external monitor port when you hit it with a FN/CTRL button.

It's normally done through the graphic/video settings.
You not only have to send a signal to the secondary monitor but also set the resolution, tell it whether you want an extended desktop or duplicate desktop, and perhaps other settings as well.

What operating system are you using? What model of laptop?

My Dell computers used a function key to switch between external monitor and on-screen. My Toshiba is configured through control panel, and once configured the first time then it seems to switch automatically whenever an external monitor is connected.

The function keys vary from model to model. Without knowing the brand of laptop, hard to say what is wrong. The more information you provide, the easier it will be to help you.
