Hi anyone know what the laws actually are, i was under the impression that it was under 4 inch blade or something like that, but then someone else told me there was absolutely no concealed carry at all. Anyone that could clarify this for me it would be most helpful

Dave

Hey Dave...

Your friend was absolutely correct...

Depending on the mood of the LEO involved and your attitude they can get you with almost anything...

It's all up to the officer and the situation...

Most will not bother you unless it's causing a problem and the blade isn't big...

I got pulled aside by an undercover LEO,coming out of a store. He thought the TOPS Wolf Pup in my front pocket was a handgun. After looking at it,,we chatted and I was on my way...

But when you are in the bush,,you can carry a machette in the open if you want...

Hope this helps...

Eric's right, it's pretty much up to the LEO to intpret the law. Technically a weapon is concealed if it has been PURPOSEFULLY hidden particularly with the INTENT to use in a criminal act. Translation-neck knives under your shirt, boot knives, belt knives, knifes in holsters stuffed under your jacket are all no-no's. Basically, don't do anything stupid and you should have no problems. Hope this helps. I just wish I could find my Martin's Criminal code, I wouldn't have to go by memory then

There are only two types of people; those who understand this, and those who think they do.

If you don't do anything to attract the attention of the police you can carry concealed any knife except for switchblades, gravity openng knives, and push daggers. If the police become involved the charge could be concealed weapon or dangerous weapon at the LEO's discretion.

The moral is never take your knife out of your pocket unless it is to be used as a tool.

George...

I agree wholeheartedly....

If you stay out of the way, in the background, and aren't prone to trouble you will be ok.

That's why you carry two knives,, one that can be pulled out to open a box for instance and one that is quiet and does nothing, unless needed.

In My opinion Only..You have to do what is right for you.

I dont know what the laws are exactly, but I quit caring when I found out about....
"possesion of a weapon dangerous to the public" or something like that.... technically you could get busted for carrying a rock if the LEO felt it warranted.

To my Canadian brothers. You have pretty much nailed it on the head, but as an American LEO I would like to add that there are several phases to contact with "The Law" and often people don't realize this.

#1- Keep your weapon properly concealed, don't flash it, don't play with it in public. Don't cause trouble. I won't stop you or watch you if you've done this right.

#2- If for some reason I see you have a knife, IT'S A TOOL! Give me a rational reason you are carrying, besides self-defense. Think this out ahead of time, don't stand thier stuttering and looking confused. Also, it's cold in the Great Northwest. You weren' trying to conceal the knife, there's just no practical way to carry it on the outside of your coat, right?

#3- If I decide your Swiss Army Knife is a deadly weapon, be polite and stay calm. I am the man with the gun. More than one person has died or been injured fighting with the cop on the street, because he knew he was 'right' or 'innocent'. If I decide to take your knife, deal with it in court, not on the street corner.

#4- If I say I'm just taking the knife, but you aren't getting charged, decide whether this is a good deal. Some officers honestly believe they are giving you a break and will stick the knife in evidence or destroy it. Some officers just want your knife. If you are not being charged, but feel strongly about it, ask for a receipt. This will either get you your knife back or get you arrested as a 'smart *ss'.

#5- Being arrested doesn't mean you're guilty. Unfortunately most street cops don't know squat about weapons laws and just do what 'The Sarge' told them. You could be cited or arrested and taken to jail, only to have the whole thing thrown out when the prosecutor looks at the case. They will never say they were wrong, but will make it sound like you are getting a break and they will probably still keep your knife.

A final thought. A lot of officers are very sympathetic to the plight of the average citizen and self-defense. If you stay quiet and polite and help them find a way to resolve the problem without getting the officer in trouble or embarassing anyone, they will probably take it.

There no restriction on blade length just as long as it's not a prohibited weapon and it's not concealed. Another thing to keep in mind is that although the knife is legal it's always best to have a good reason as to why you have the knife. And don't flick, snap, or even open your knife in any "overly attention grabbing" way (in front of an officer at least). If your folder is "too loose" (in the officer's opinion) it could be taken away. If ever asked to demonstrate how to open your knife, I suggest doing so with both hands and slowly. For some reason some people think it's less threatening, well...unless you carry something like a spyderco civilian.
As mentioned before, just keep a low profile and you should be fine. I do my best to attract as little attention as possible cuz I'm not 100% confident that I can explain why I'm carrying 4 knives on me unless I happen to have my lucky horseshoe stuck FAR up my a$$.

This is a complicated subject and I'm sorry I don't have time to give a detailed response. Too busy with less important but more complicated law for the next few weeks. The advice given so far is good common sense. Meanwhile, I'll try to link to another thread which deals with some of the issues raised by your question, passim: www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum32/HTML/000586.html

Hi JasonW

There is For sure a blade size restriction when in public places, shopping malls Bars stuff like this...
Be it a Kurkri or a RUK SAK, if theres problems you'll burn for it...

I for sure wouldn't want to be caught walking down the street with my AI,,in the open or for that matter concealed...

Now when it comes to the Bush,,while hunting, camping what have you,, theres No problem,,you can carry Open,,anything you like.. In public it's a different story..

All depends on the Copper/His Mood and your "Tude", and the particular situation.. If you're the Dude with a Tude,,you get busted,,don't matter what it is...

Please see http://www.physics.mun.ca/~sstamp/knives/canada.html
for a good description of knife laws in Canada.
The part that worries me the most is the part that says "a knife that has a blade that opens automatically by gravity or centrifugal force" (note that it does not say open by gravity). There are a number of knives available in Canada that may fall into this category - Benchmade Axis Locks, Spyderco's etc. etc.
