i have been looking around online but i can't find a place that will tell me what to do to get a concealed carry license in CT. i was hoping a fellow connecticutian would be able to help me out, or if someone else could post a link.

i want the license so that i don't have to worry about things like havings a larger than legal knife on me. on occasion i have grabbed my woods bag before going out to the store or something, without thinking to take out my 4 inch plus knife. i am just afraid that if i am searched i could be in trouble for having an illegal knife, not that i normally put myself into such sitations, but i would rather be safe.

also, if i would feel better having the license if i felt the need to bring a larger knife etc on a hike or when traveling to another part of the state.

thanks ahead of time...

i have just thought of something that i hadn't remembered to voice before;

would a concealed license allow me to carry otherwise illegal knives, or would it only allow me to carry a gun? would a fishing or hunting license allow me to carry otherwise illegal knives as having such a license is listed as one of the exemptions from the 4" limit.

The license only allows you to cary a handgun. There is no way to carry a illegal knife legally other than being emergency services.

There are exceptions for someone lawfully engaged in hunting activities. However, the operative word is engaged. It is not enough to be carrying a hunting license. It has to be a hunting season, and you must be in the act of hunting, or going to or from your hunting area. This is not to say that you can carry any otherwise illegal knife while hunting, but that there are exceptions for larger fixed blades for example. And, in NY you can legally carry a switchblade while hunting. If it is huntng season, and you are giong to or from your hunting area and you are carrying an otherwise illegal knife and you stop at the store for a cup of coffee, leave the knife in the car.

Cont'd the reason why our permit is titled

"Permit to Carry a Pistol or Revolver"

For lawful hunting, fishing, or trapping purposes, you are allowed to carry a knife, with the edged portion of the blade being 4" or greater if you the proper sporting license. You can also carry a knife with a 4"+ edged blade for the purposes of salt water fishing, provided you are doing such legally. No stipulation that it needs to be a fixed blade.

By now, you've seen my two prior posts. A Permit to Carry a Pistol or Revolver isn't going to get you anywhere with a knife. Dangerous weapons as defined in section 53-206 are still illegal to carry if you have a PCPR.

In Connecticut a PCPR is required to purchase a handgun in CT and if you purchase a long gun and have a valid PCPR (or hunting license, or IIRC a police ID or Military ID), you can avoid the 14 day waiting period (provided you pass the DPS call-in background check).

If you visit the following website, you can find a lot of good info about the Connecticut PCPR: www.packing.org/state/connecticut

Also, Visit the Department of Public Safety Special Licensing and Firearms Unit Site: http://www.ct.gov/dps/cwp/view.asp?a=2158&Q=294512&dpsNav=|&dpsNav_GID=1658
If you have a specific questions, and email them, they'll get back to you pretty quickly.

The Waterbury Police Department has a Temperary State Pistol Permit application posted on its website. I'll post the link for your viewing pleasure. Bear in mind that you need to apply for your temperary permit with your local police, so contact them for the form and fingerprinting information. Also bear ion mind that you'll have to pass a pistol course as well. That will cost about $100, but they're relatively easy to find.

I carry about 20 knives in my truck that range from 9" to 15" total length. I put them in a briefcase with sharpening equipment. If I get pulled over I tell the cop I am a knife dealer and these are demo's for the customer to try out. I then make an attempt to sell the cop a knife. If they go for it then you buy a knife and sell it to them. It has worked every time flawlessly.

thanks guys for the info...i guess i will just have to be careful about taking my knife out of my bag before going places...
