I recently had three Public Defenders modified for concealed carry.

Super bad bladesmith Andrew Takach did the modifications.

Here are some pics of what they looked like before modification. The snakeskin PD pic is a Busse promo image (obviously) but I am tacking it on here so you can get a good image of what two of the PDs looked like prior to "treatment."

No worries, the snakeskin slabs found a good home.

The second pic shows the third PD. It was a rams horn PD that had previously been modded by Ban and resharpened by Jeremy Horton. The pic is from Jeremy's sales thread for this knife.

Here's a pic of the initial grind on one of the PDs, along with a yet-to-be-sullied PD. Note the drawn marks on the un-modded PD, indicating where the reshaping grinds will be located.

The guard was ground off and turned into an index finger groove. The butt was seriously reduced (to a point above the third fastener hole) and given a "hook" for the little finger, in case the blade gets lodged in a... uh... zombie moose. Or something else.

Hand-shaped black linen micarta was used for the handles.

The distal tapers were extended and convex grinds applied to the edges. The saber ground spines of the PDs were left intact (other than the distal taper extensions) to keep some meat on their bones.

Here's a sneak peek of one of the finished PDs being fitted for a new pair of leather pants.

Here are the three finished knives, in three different flying formations.

Andrew reshaped the handles, convexed the edges, increaded the distal tapers, satin polished the blades, shaped and applied the black linen micarta, and used stainless solid pins for fasteners.

Here's an up-close look at one of the blades.

These knives are now in the hands of another knifemaker who specializes in concealed carry sheath systems. I'm sure you can figure out who he is.

The purpose of these modifications was simple: to improve performance and concealability. To meet these requirements, the following modifications needed to be performed:

1. Reduce the handle length and width.
2. Cut the overall weight of the knife without compromising the initial blade length.
3. Convex the edges and increase distal tapers to maximize slashing/thrusting efficiency and effectiveness.

While not designed for looks, they sure are pretty.

Hey, wasn't this the blades we were guessing on??? Didn't I say PD? Do you need to know where to ship my knife now? ;)

Great work on the blades, but..............

I hate to see such fine, hard to find blades modified. Oh well. It just makes my originals go up and up in value:D

the one in the center with the smallest choil is my favorite:thumbup:

That one was the previously modded one. I like it best too but have no complaints about the others.

I said the winner gets a doodle. So, what do you prefer: markers or crayons? :D

No doubt a lot of people will agree with you. Good thing I could only get my hands on three of them!

Very nice:thumbup:
You have a lifetime supply!

Thank you. That was the idea - to never NEED another concealed carry knife again. Now whether I buy another one or not is another story.

Thanks all, though it was all dan's designs , i was just there to turn the power on and off on the tools.;)

Well...

You redesigned the butt.

You convinced me to keep the saber grind.

You convinced me to go with two pins and not three.

I'd say you did your share of design contributions! Besides, I got the initial idea from your stuff anyway.

Outstanding work.
The Busse PD, is my all time favorite Busse knife---at the present time.
