Concealing big blades w/ Southern Comfort???

Hello, I was reading about bowie knives & such & I heard about carrying big blades in a Southern Comfort sheath by River City Sheaths as a way to actually carry a very large knife concealed, like maybe under a jacket, like even an 11" Plus blade bowie type knife. I went to the river city sheath site & looked around but I can't find any pictures of anyone wearing a knife in their sheath. I also queried "southern comfort knife sheath in google images & youtube & can't find any videos or pictures.

The reason I am so interested is that I am wanting to a large fighting knife, probably a fighting bowie type design, like a CS natches or Bagwell production bowie type knife, and I would like to know if there is a way I could theoretically conceal it at least sometimes, if I wanted to.

I have a FL CWL and I already conceal a bunch of guns/knives under a sport coat jacket, of linen or something warmer in the winter. I usually carry a CS oss stuck point down IWB just behind the hip in a very vertical orientation w/ primary draw into a same side reverse grip.

Anyway, can someone post some pics or vid links that show different carrry/concealment methods w/ this type of sheath?

Thanks

Here are a few that I can think of.

Check out Armoralleather - Dwayne makes some really nice shoulder and Dundee style rigs. He is on this forum in the "sheaths and such" section.

http://www.shirepost.com/Vorpal.html - here's a link to Vorpal knives. Maringer made a good draw shoulder sheath / knife.

Some time ago I bought a Bobby Branton Vorpal Ranger which is a big beast of a blade worn in a shoulder rig. The problem is usually the off side strap working its way up into your armpit, but it's doable. I am not sure if Bobby still makes his Vorpal Ranger.

Also, have a look at blade rigger, James Piorek - http://www.bladerigger.com/

I have a Natchez with a SC sheath. The reality is, you need to be wearing a three quarter length coat to conceal the sheath successfully.

I have a slightly shorter 9,5 inch bowie with a sash style sheath and its the same story. I can pull the 9,5 incher off in a longish jacket like the M-65 for example.

Bottom line: it is no easy thing to conceal a large knife, no matter what type of sheath system you use. You can go IWB but dont expect it to be comfortable.

The right type of overcoat is essential. So if you live in a warm climate, you are going to struggle no matter what.

if someone could post a pic?

I mean, does the knife carry w/ the point up or the handle up at least?

Draw point strong side carry then. The guys I know who carry SC do it primarily strong side in that same spot, just not draw point(reverse grip). The draw is similar to clearing a large pistol.

The IWB stud sheaths are great because you can move them around or take the knife off for a minute without having to undo some whole suspension system. Just pick in up and drop in IWB in a sweet spot. I'm 6'4", and carrying a Laredo is the limit of what I can do reasonably in a t-shirt with a SC. Sitting down, standing up, kneeling, it takes some commitment and common sense. I do it on a fairly regular basis, and once it's cold enough for a thicker shirt or coat I don't even worry about it printing.

The difficulty I had carrying the Natchez was the wide blade and large guard/handle. The guard on the Ontario knife was what I worried about printing, but I know smaller guys than myself who work it into the routine. I don't know anyone who carries that Natchez very often.

i've never used one of the SC's, or any other makers custom concealment rigs. however, i do make IWB's that have made concealing an 11" OAL (relatively) convenient and am working on "The Badlander" which will be a totally ambidextrous sheath designed for concealing large fixed blade in a, formerly, unseen manner :D

you'd be surprised how big a knife will ride comfortably, IWB, behind the strongside hip :) if fact, my motivation for designing the Badlander wasn't due to not being able to fit a big enough knife IWB, it was to achieve the ambi draw option. it's a design that keeps getting kicked to the back burner, though, might never make one :(

Not what the OP was asking but the kydex sheath for the CRKT Hissatsu fixed blade can be easily configured for high IWB concealed carry for righthanders by mounting the clip upside down and at the top of the sheath - but this configuration restricts knife use to reverse icepick grip only.

This is off topic, but when I read the title I was really confused. I was thinking that you were going to somehow hide knives in bourbon???
