I'm not sure if my new Native just needs to be broken in or what....

But, the last inch or so before the blade closes, it doesn't snap shut in the same manner that my other FRN Spydies close. (ball detent problem?) I'm thinking of calling Mike and asking him about it, but I figured that I'd first ask those of you out there that have one of these new S30V Natives.

Has anyone had any problems like this?

The "snap" back lock doesn't close real "hard", but it does make mine easier to spydie drop open :) .

thombrogan, mine does the same.... Once the blade is closed, it doesn't open whatsoever. I just find it odd that it doesn't snap closed in the manner that my other FRN Spydies do.

My Native has a different feel from my Delica on closing, but it still does close the blade by itself. Just not snappy. I happen to like it like that. The Native is MUCH smoother than my delica on opening. Sal, please don't change this!

I did accidently drop my closed S30V on the floor and it opened. But, I don't plan on dropping it anymore.

I don't know if it's Spydie's 440v or 440v in general, but I don't like it much compared to S30V.

I find it incredibly hard to get a good edge on it; the burr just keeps flopping back and forth. (This is on an EdgePro.) When I finally manage to convince the burr to go away, I end up with a nice edge on it that's so toothy (the carbides?!) that it won't cut thin material/soft tissue easily. (Albeit, it saws right through thicker material...). It just taks a LOT more effort to cut than I would expect, especially for such a thin blade.

Give me S30V or even 154CM any day for a light to moderate use knife... maybe the 440V holds an edge a lot longer than S30V, but I can't seem to get one there (no problems with VG-10, 440C, ATS34/154cm, S30V, carbon, etc etc)

General, I haven't had much of a chance yet to compare the 440V to the S30V. I'll get around to it sooner or later. ;) As for the Native's performance, it is faultless except for the little matter that I've posted above. I was so busy at work today that I forgot to call Mike. :(

Even some of the 440V Natives also had this problem.

Try a search on 'Native lock snap'.

Biogon,

My Chinook is my EDC but I also have trouble sharpening it. Like you said, the burr just keeps floating back and forth. I use a sharpmaker and I'm experamenting with just using the medium stones instead of following with the fine stones. 440V doesn't seem to like a mirror edge.

I use a wooden backed leather strop loaded with chromium oxide honing compound to remove the burr on my blades, including those that are CPM440V. I don't use it enough to polish the edge, just enough to remove the burr and leave it hair-popping sharp.
