Concerning fakes on eBay

This is a re-post of something I posted back in 2015. The recent fake thread motivated me to bring this forward in its own thread.

Ebay is a cesspool of counterfit Buck knives now. Although eBay has a no counterfit written policy, the reality is they don't care and don't have to do anything about it. There was a lawsuit against ebay by Tiffany. Seems a lot of Tiffany items on eBay are fake. The court ruling was in eBays favor saying they were not responsible for the merchandise of the sellers.

Excerpt from Wikipedia article on the Lawsuit...
Organizations such as the International Anti-Counterfeiting Coalition (IACC), however, accuse eBay of turning a blind eye to the amount of counterfeiting that occurs on its website.[59] According to the IACC, 29% of online counterfeit sales occur through eBay.

Ultimately it is the responsibility of Buck (the company) to take action.

This was my experience with reporting fakes to ebay. Post copied below from a different thread. My suggestion to friends buying on eBay, for knives or anything else - only buy from a long time reputable seller. My experience for eBay to do anything was also this - "Ultimately it is the responsibility of Buck (the company) to take action".

Way back when I would report any Cold Steel fake knife I would come across while looking on eBay (not looking for fake knives, there are just so many it's hard to not find one - PSA, only buy from a long time reputable seller on eBay). Nothing was ever removed. I even spoke to a customer service agent, mentioning that the knife I was reporting was listed on Cold Steel's website as being fake. They agreed that they could see the knife on the Cold Steel website was the knife listed on eBay. They said "A Cold Steel representative would have to call eBay to have the knife removed". Basically, if the company doesn't call, eBay will not remove. At least it was that way years ago. Seems like nothing has changed.

Edit: Wow, I just checked, there is one for sale right now (seller may not know it is fake ?) of the AK47 with a flipper tab. Cold Steel never made this knife with the flipper tab. All Cold Steel AK47 knives that have this tab are fake. This knife is no longer listed in the counterfeit area on the Cold Steel website for some reason, but this knife with the flipper tab was for sale all of the time on eBay and would sale for big money, unfortunately. I personally saw a lot of these sale and reported every one of them before they sold. Ebay did nothing.

Roger,

You are absolutely correct, Ebay could care less about what the sellers sell as long as they make a profit. The knife I bought last month that was a counterfeit Buck knife, I was luck the seller sent my money back. There is another seller with one of those knives for sale right now on Ebay. I contacted Ebay to tell them a seller was selling a knife they claim to be a Buck 192 customized by Michael Prater. They (Ebay) sent me an email saying they will allow the seller to sell his Prater custom.

I did send a detailed email to Bucks counterfeit email link, it's up to them to have these removed I guess.

Meanwhile E-Bay is running ads for Car Parts.

"guaranteed to fit" they say.

It's just coincidental irony I guess..... 🤨

I have reported many counterfeit sellers to ebay and nothing happened. Most items eventually sold. I stopped reporting them but still on an occasion message the seller telling them the item they are selling is a counterfeit
Some ended or revised their listing but most did nothing.

i have talked to several customer service reps at ebay over the years...my conclusion is most of them hardly even know it is a knife you are telling them about-most of them know nothing about the product---if ya tell em its a fork they dont even know the difference... none of them have the knowledge we have about knives...there may be a few reps at ebay that know something about said product...most of the time they have a instruction manual in front of them directing them how to deal with a situation...
buck knives has to be more on top of reporting to ebay....

At any given time there are approximately 1.7 billion items on eBay worldwide, 850 million visitors daily (2nd only to Amazon) While Buck knives may be very important in your life they are an extremely small niche business for eBay and to expect someone to respond immediately (or ever) to a claim of wrong doing is very unrealistic. Counterfeiting is never right but to think an email to ebay is going to solve the problem is akin to tilting at windmills. The overwhelming number of people who purchase Bick knives online are adults, they should act like it and do their due diligence. No I don't work for eBay

I am not trying to let eBay off the hook, but there is no way they can employ anyone that would have enough knowledge to actively go out and determine whether each knife from each brand was legitimate or counterfeit based upon seller’s photos. The one area that would help eBay would be to allow users to report fakes and then describe why they think the knife is fake. Right now, eBay limits you to a 250-character message in your report. Allow users to describe what the reviewer needs to look at in detail and it would allow the reviewer to more accurately determine the legitimacy of a disputed item.

For some reason, I have been looking for a discontinued Buck Omni Hunter. Buck made these models for approximately 10 years and changed the sheath style and blade stamp font after the first few years. In researching these knives, I found about half the ones on eBay now are fake. There are subtle differences, but none that really scream fake. Look at the photos below and see if you can spot which ones are real and which ones are fake.

Because of the number of fake Bucks on eBay I basically quit buying on that platform. But since I know a little about 112's I do still look for older odd ones. What it really does is harm newer collectors! And causes the value of our collections to go down. I wish we could do something that would impact sellers of fake Bucks.. The only thing I can think of is to bombard them with messages, questions and super low offers to waste THERE time..
