First I thank those who made suggestions to my post. I took all of them into consideration including going to the sporting goods store to feel them out. The only one I didn't personally see was the Rat 2. Having said that, I just might have to put that in my own line up of inexpensive edc's.
So for my 13 yr old I bought a black Mini Griptilian. She will appreciate the ease of closing with the axis lock because I've noticed some hesitation about closing with a liner or bar lock, where her fingers begin in the path of the closing blade. Also why I ruled out a back lock. I could see her grasping the handle and pressing the back lock with a one handed shake and the blade slicing her middle finger. With the axis lock the closing grip allows your three fingers to grasp along the side of the handle while you thumb and index pull back the lock. Not a sure bet, but with careful instruction I can instill the right technique to keeping her fingers clear.
Now my 10 yr old daughter is a different story. She is the one who askes me a lot if she can handle my knives. She enjoys the one handed flick opening and closing, in particular bar and liner locks. Though she may likely be the first to cut herself, she isn't intimidated at all and likes practicing the one handed operation. I bought her a Spyderco Persistence because I know she will especially appreciate the rock solid flipping action, much as she enjoys my C/F Sage.
The other consideration was the Delica 4, but while it was slim and had a thine feel in the hand it didn't rocket flip like the Persistence which was also nearly have the cost; though that wasn't the primary deciding point.
Other knives I tested were the CRKT Ripple 2 (didn't care for the aluminum scales feel)
And the Kershaw Leek that wasn't the feel in the hand I liked with the Mini Griptilian and the Persistence. Besides as an after thought, what better name for a knife gift for a 10 yr old daughter who never gives up!
Thanks for Bladeforums media to channel my questions, and the blade brothers input to help make a rational choice.
Merry Christmas to ya all.
